Ike gives the order to commence D-Day, the largest amphibious assault in history.

To paratroopers of Company E, 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment (Strike) of the 101st Airborne Division, he tells them 'Full victory-nothing else', just before they board aircraft to participate in Operation Neptune, the first phase of Operation Overlord; the invasion of the continent of Europe.

The USS Nevada, off the coast of the Cherbourg Peninsula, bombarded shore defenses during the invasion. The battery of the Nevada was augmented by one of the USS Arizona's big guns, ashore being relined December 7, 1941.

Photo taken at Greenham Common Airfield in England about 8:30 p.m. on June 5, 1944.

Today marks the 68th anniversary of Operation Overlord; D-Day, the long awaited Allied invasion of N**i occupied Europe.

Over 4000 Allied troops lost their lives on that day in the supreme effort to overthrow German forces and return Europe to freedom.

They will never be forgotten.

Pictured is the USS Nevada firing a salvo at Utah Beach.

The Nevada's battery was augmented by one of the Arizona's big guns which was being relined December 7, 1941 (see story below).

Citation:

For conspicuous devotion to duty, extraordinary courage, and complete disregard of his own life, during the attack on the Fleet in Pearl Harbor, Territory of Hawaii, by Japanese Forces on December 7, 1941. He immediately went to the bridge and as Commander Battleship Division ONE, courageously discharged his duties as Senior Officer Present Afloat until the USS ARIZONA, his Flagship, blew up from magazine explosions and a direct bomb hit on the bridge, which resulted in the loss of his life.
