Dear AFGE Family -
The Ebola virus is a serious matter. Its spread to the US has revealed serious gaps in our ability to protect health care and public safety workers and the American people. Those gaps must be eliminated.
Watch a message from President J. David Cox, Sr. here.
Here at national headquarters, I have formed a task force to focus on Ebola and our response to what I hope will NOT be any kind of epidemic here in the USA.
We’ve got several initiatives going: I’ve spoken with OPM Director Katherine Archuleta and demanded regular briefings and updates for myself and our leaders in the agencies. I also asked her to make sure that everybody who has been deemed to have been exposed or potentially exposed be granted 21 days of paid administrative leave while on quarantine. I’ve asked for the provision of the highest quality protective gear, training so that the federal workforce can protect itself and the public, and provision of any equipment or measures necessary to carry out recommendations of the CDC, OSHA, or other medical authorities.
I’ve sent a letter to VA Secretary McDonald on Ebola, and letters to DoD and DHS are being written as you read this. AFGE will continue to work with the administration, key agency leaders and our partners in labor to ensure the strictest precautionary measures, finest equipment and most up-to-date information are made available to you as this situation develops.
For more information on AFGE's Ebola response and how to protect yourself from the virus, visit www.afge.org/ebola.
Thank you for all that you do.
In solidarity,
J. David Cox, Sr.
President, AFGE

!!! Federal Employees: Important information on Potential Government Shutdown:
Earlier this afternoon President Gage was on a conference call with OMB and OPM. The purpose was to brief AFGE and other federal employee unions on their preparations for a possible government shutdown. OMB and OPM were very clear that they hope Congress will complete all of its work and avoid a shutdown which would officially begin at midnight Friday, December 16. But they also believe that it is only prudent to prepare for what they hope does not happen. The purpose of this email is to provide you with an initial update on what AFGE was advised on the phone call.
(1) Agencies have been advised to contact their respective labor representatives.
(2) Agencies are currently updating their shutdown plans from last April.
(3) Agencies will likely send a broad email to affected employees today with general information.
(4) Tomorrow, agencies will begin informally contacting employees to let them know their essential/non-essential status. This should be completed by Friday morning.
(5) On Thursday night agencies will likely provide initial guidance.
(6) If needed, final guidance and formal notification to employees would occur Friday.
(7) Employees who work weekends will perform their orderly shutdown duties on Saturday.
(8) Employees who work during the week will perform their orderly shutdown duties Monday morning.
(9) OPM will be posting guidance tonight governing the scenario where employees have scheduled leave.
AFGE will provide more guidance as this situation develops. At this juncture all AFGE Locals are encouraged to contact Agency management to stay abreast in real time of specific information regarding your bargaining unit(s).
