Western Balkans Update from Washington

The White House has formally transmitted to the U.S. Senate the nominations of Michael Young as U.S. Ambassador to Serbia, Ronald Johnson as U.S. Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Peter McCoy as U.S. Ambassador to Montenegro. All three nominations now advance to the Senate confirmation process.

These nominations send a clear signal that the United States remains actively engaged in the Western Balkans. At a time of ongoing geopolitical challenges, the appointment of ambassadors across the region demonstrates that stability, security, and democratic development in Southeast Europe continue to matter to this administration and to U.S. foreign policy more broadly.

American Congressmen Hold Meetings in Kosovo and the Presheva Valley, Reaffirm Support for Security, NATO, and the Strategic Partnership with the United States

A bipartisan delegation from the United States Congress, composed of Republican Congressman Keith Self and Democratic Congressman Suhas Subramanyam, paid a two-day visit to Kosovo and the Presheva Valley. During the visit, the American delegation held a series of meetings with institutional leaders, political representatives, civil society representatives, media representatives, and other relevant stakeholders, focusing on strengthening the partnership between Kosovo and the United States, regional security issues, Euro-Atlantic integration, and the rights of Albanians in the Presheva Valley.

During the meeting with the delegation, Acting President Albulena Haxhiu expressed gratitude for the continuous support that the United States and the U.S. Congress have provided to Kosovo over the years, emphasizing that the relationship between the two countries remains one of the most important pillars of the Republic of Kosovo’s foreign and security policy.

She highlighted that the citizens of Kosovo deeply appreciate the historic role of the United States during key moments related to the country’s freedom, state-building, and democratic consolidation.

In the meeting, Acting President Haxhiu particularly welcomed Congressman Self’s support for Kosovo’s Euro-Atlantic aspirations, especially membership in NATO, as well as his engagement regarding the rights of Albanians in the Presheva Valley. She stressed that Kosovo’s integration into the North Atlantic Alliance is a strategic objective that contributes to regional stability and long-term security.

Acting President Haxhiu also welcomed the discussion with Congressman Suhas Subramanyam regarding opportunities to expand cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including technology, innovation, education, and cybersecurity.

The meeting reaffirmed Kosovo’s commitment to advancing its partnership with the United States in the fields of defense, economic development, diplomacy, and Euro-Atlantic integration.

As part of their visit to Kosovo, the American congressmen were also received by Acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti. During the meeting, Prime Minister Kurti thanked the American delegation for its bipartisan support for the Republic of Kosovo, emphasizing the importance of continued support from the U.S. Congress for the country’s Euro-Atlantic aspirations.

He particularly welcomed the congressmen’s support for Kosovo’s NATO membership, reflected in resolutions introduced in the U.S. Congress, as well as their commitment to maintaining the American presence within the KFOR mission. The meeting also addressed the deepening of cooperation in defense, technology, education, and strategic investments, as well as the need for minority rights to be equally respected across all countries of the Western Balkans.

The American delegation was also received at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora by Acting Minister Glauk Konjufca. During the meeting, the special partnership between Kosovo and the United States of America was reaffirmed as an alliance built upon shared values of freedom, democracy, and security.

Minister Konjufca expressed deep gratitude for the historic role of the United States in the liberation and state-building of Kosovo, emphasizing that American support remains vital for advancing Kosovo’s international standing. He thanked Congressman Keith Self for his continued engagement in support of Kosovo, including initiatives in the U.S. Congress related to Kosovo’s NATO membership and the institutional addressing of issues concerning Albanians in Presheva, Bujanoc, and Medvegja.

As part of their visit, the American congressmen were also received by KFOR Commander Major General Özkan Ulutaş at the mission headquarters in Camp “Film City” in Prishtina. During the meeting, discussions focused on the security situation in the region and KFOR’s continued commitment to ensuring a safe and secure environment for all citizens of Kosovo.

The delegation of American congressmen is visiting Kosovo in cooperation with Albanians for American F(AFA). During the visit, they also held meetings with representatives of several other political entities, civil society representatives, and media representatives, and visited the Gračanica Monastery.

As part of this regional tour, the congressional delegation also visited the Presheva Valley, where they met with local authorities and Albanian political representatives from the region. Discussions focused on the rights of Albanians in Presheva, Bujanoc, and Medvegja, the need for equal treatment, and the importance of regional stability and cooperation in the Western Balkans.

Kongresistët amerikanë zhvilluan takime në Kosovë dhe në Luginën e Preshevës, riafirmohet mbështetja për sigurinë, NATO-n dhe partneritetin strategjik me SHBA-në

Një delegacion bipartizan i Kongresit të Shteteve të Bashkuara të Amerikës, i përbërë nga kongresisti republikan Keith Self dhe kongresisti demokrat Suhas Subramanyam, ka qëndruar për vizitë dy ditore në Kosovë dhe në Luginën e Preshevës. Gjatë kësaj vizite, delegacioni amerikan zhvilloi një sërë takimesh me krerë institucionalë, përfaqësues politikë, përfaqësues të shoqërisë civile, mediave dhe faktorë të tjerë relevantë, me fokus forcimin e partneritetit ndërmjet Kosovës dhe SHBA-së, çështjet e sigurisë rajonale, integrimin euroatlantik dhe të drejtat e shqiptarëve në Luginën e Preshevës.

Gjatë takimit me ta, U.d. Presidentja Haxhiu shprehu falënderim për përkrahjen e vazhdueshme që SHBA-ja dhe Kongresi Amerikan i kanë dhënë Kosovës ndër vite, duke theksuar se raporti ndërmjet dy vendeve mbetet një nga shtyllat më të rëndësishme të politikës së jashtme dhe të sigurisë së Republikës së Kosovës.

Ajo vuri në pah se qytetarët e Kosovës e vlerësojnë thellësisht rolin historik të Shteteve të Bashkuara në momentet kyçe për lirinë, shtetndërtimin dhe konsolidimin demokratik të vendit.

Në kuadër të vizitës së tyre në Kosovë, kongresistët amerikanë u pritën edhe nga Kryeministri në detyrë, Albin Kurti. Gjatë takimit, Kryeministri Kurti falënderoi delegacionin amerikan për mbështetjen dypartiake ndaj Republikës së Kosovës, duke theksuar rëndësinë e përkrahjes së vazhdueshme të Kongresit Amerikan për aspiratat euroatlantike të vendit.

Ai vlerësoi veçanërisht mbështetjen e kongresistëve për anëtarësimin e Kosovës në NATO, të reflektuar edhe në rezolutat e prezantuara në Kongresin amerikan, si dhe angazhimin për vazhdimin e pranisë amerikane në kuadër të misionit të KFOR-it. Në takim u diskutua edhe për thellimin e bashkëpunimit në fushën e mbrojtjes, teknologjisë, arsimit dhe investimeve strategjike, si dhe për nevojën që të drejtat e pakicave të respektohen në mënyrë të barabartë në të gjitha shtetet e Ballkanit Perëndimor.

Delegacioni amerikan u prit gjithashtu në Ministrinë e Punëve të Jashtme dhe Diasporës nga ministri në detyrë, Glauk Konjufca. Në takim u riafirmua partneriteti i veçantë ndërmjet Kosovës dhe Shteteve të Bashkuara të Amerikës, si një aleancë e ndërtuar mbi vlera të përbashkëta të lirisë, demokracisë dhe sigurisë.

Ministri Konjufca shprehu mirënjohje të thellë për rolin historik të SHBA-së në çlirimin dhe shtetndërtimin e Kosovës, duke theksuar se mbështetja amerikane mbetet jetike për avancimin e subjektivitetit ndërkombëtar të vendit. Ai falënderoi kongresistin Keith Self për angazhimin e tij të vazhdueshëm në mbështetje të Kosovës, përfshirë iniciativat në Kongresin amerikan që lidhen me anëtarësimin e Kosovës në NATO dhe adresimin institucional të çështjes së shqiptarëve në Preshevë, Bujanoc dhe Medvegjë.

Në kuadër të vizitës së tyre, kongresistët amerikanë u pritën edhe nga komandanti i KFOR-it, gjeneralmajor Özkan Ulutaş, në selinë e misionit në kampin “Film City” në Prishtinë. Gjatë takimit u diskutua për situatën e sigurisë në rajon dhe për angazhimin e vazhdueshëm të KFOR-it në garantimin e një ambienti të qetë dhe të sigurt për të gjithë qytetarët e Kosovës.

Delegacioni i kongresistëve amerikanë po qëndron në Kosovë në koordinim me organizatën Albanian for America (AFA). Në kuadër të vizitës, ata kanë zhvilluar takime me përfaqësues të disa subjekteve të tjera politike, përfaqësues të shoqërisë civile dhe mediave, si dhe kanë vizituar Manastirin e Graçanicës.

Në kuadër të këtij turneu, delegacioni i kongresistëve vizitoi edhe Luginën e Preshevës, ku u takua me autoritetet lokale dhe përfaqësues politikë të shqiptarëve në atë rajon. Në këto takime u diskutua për të drejtat e shqiptarëve në Preshevë, Bujanoc dhe Medvegjë, nevojën për trajtim të barabartë dhe rëndësinë e stabilitetit dhe bashkëpunimit rajonal në Ballkanin Perëndimor.

American Congressman Keith Self: The Ohrid Agreement Must Be Implemented and the Rights of Albanians Protected

American Congressman Keith Self held separate meetings today on North Macedonia with representatives of the Albanian Student Movement and with Albanian opposition leaders from North Macedonia, where discussions focused on political developments in the country, the position of Albanians, and the need for the full implementation of the Ohrid Agreement.

The meeting with representatives of the Albanian Student Movement was attended by Mevlan Ademi, Besar Sejdiu, and Jon Selimi, who presented their concerns regarding the non-implementation of the Law on the Use of Languages and trends which, according to them, undermine the acquired rights of Albanians.

The student representatives emphasized the importance of protecting the Albanian language, respecting constitutional equality, and preserving the spirit of coexistence and guaranteed representation established by the Ohrid Agreement.

Congressman Self later also met with Albanian opposition leaders in North Macedonia, including Ali Ahmeti and Zijadin Sela.

During the discussions, participants addressed the current political developments, the challenges faced by Albanians in North Macedonia, and the importance of respecting agreements and standards that guarantee equality, representation, and interethnic stability.

Congressman Keith Self reiterated the importance of preserving stability, respecting democratic rights, and fully implementing the Ohrid Agreement as a guarantee for coexistence and long-term peace in the country and the region.

Congressman Self’s visit to the region comes after his stay in the Presheva Valley and meetings with Albanian political and institutional representatives there, as well as following meetings with the highest leaders of Kosovo’s institutions.

Kongresisti amerikan Keith Self: Të zbatohet Marrëveshja e Ohrit dhe të ruhen të drejtat e shqiptarëve

Kongresisti amerikan Keith Self zhvilloi sot në Maqedoninë e Veriut takime të ndara me përfaqësues të Lëvizjes Studentore shqiptare dhe me liderë të opozitës shqiptare nga Maqedonia e Veriut, ku u diskutua për zhvillimet politike në vend, pozitën e shqiptarëve dhe nevojën për zbatimin e plotë të Marrëveshjes së Ohrit.

Në takimin me përfaqësuesit e Lëvizjes Studentore shqiptare morën pjesë Mevlan Ademi, Besar Sejdiu dhe Jon Selimi, të cilët paraqitën shqetësimet e tyre lidhur me moszbatimin e Ligjit për përdorimin e gjuhëve dhe tendencat që, sipas tyre, cenojnë të drejtat e fituara të shqiptarëve.

Përfaqësuesit studentorë theksuan rëndësinë e mbrojtjes së gjuhës shqipe, respektimit të barazisë kushtetuese dhe ruajtjes së frymës së bashkëjetesës e të përfaqësimit të garantuar me Marrëveshjen e Ohrit.

Më pas, kongresisti Self zhvilloi takim edhe me liderët e opozitës shqiptare në Maqedoninë e Veriut, ku morën pjesë Ali Ahmeti dhe Zijadin Sela.

Gjatë diskutimeve u trajtuan zhvillimet aktuale politike, sfidat me të cilat përballen shqiptarët në Maqedoninë e Veriut dhe rëndësia e respektimit të marrëveshjeve dhe standardeve që garantojnë barazi, përfaqësim dhe stabilitet ndëretnik.

Kongresisti amerikan Keith Self ritheksoi rëndësinë e ruajtjes së stabilitetit, respektimit të të drejtave demokratike dhe zbatimit të plotë të Marrëveshjes së Ohrit si garanci për bashkëjetesë dhe paqe afatgjatë në vend dhe rajon.

⁩The bipartisan visit of U.S. congressmen: evidence of America’s continued commitment to Albanians

Of all the international visits to Kosovo in recent decades, few carry the symbolism, political weight, and strategic message of the visit by two American congressmen, Keith Self (Republican) and Suhas Subramanyam (Democrat). This visit, taking place at the request of Albanians for America, sends a clear and powerful signal of bipartisan American support at a time when our region faces major security and development challenges.

The visit comes at a defining moment for Kosovo. In just a few days, Kosovo’s citizens will head to the polls, but regardless of the outcome, the relationship with the United States will remain crucial to Kosovo’s Euro-Atlantic path.

For Kosovo, American support has always transcended parties, administrations, and political cycles. Therefore, this visit holds historical significance, particularly regarding the part of the visit to the Presheva Valley, and in some ways recalls the American delegation’s visit to Prishtina during the 1990s.

On August 29, 1990, the delegation led by Bob Dole, together with Senators John Warner, Jake Garn, Don Nickles, Al D’Amato, Steve Symms, and Connie Mack, witnessed firsthand the brutality of the Yugoslav regime in Kosovo. That visit became a historic turning point. From Prishtina, the truth about Kosovo found its way to the U.S. Congress, the White House, and democratic societies around the world.

Albanians once again need the truth to be witnessed and defended by the United States.

In the Presheva Valley, Albanians continue to face severe forms of institutional repression by the Serbian state. The passive deactivation of Albanian addresses, administrative cleansing, economic discrimination, and political marginalization are sophisticated methods aimed at diminishing the Albanian presence in the region.

This process, which has affected thousands of Albanian families, represents a modern form of ethnic cleansing. By deactivating addresses, Belgrade is attempting to artificially reduce the Albanian presence in the Valley.

The visit of American congressmen to Presheva is a message and proof that the Valley has not been forgotten. It is also a reminder that Washington’s attention remains firmly focused on the Balkans.

Congressman Keith Self has, in recent months, become one of the strongest voices in advocating for Kosovo and the rights of Albanians in the Presheva Valley within the U.S. Congress.

Self has described Kosovo as “one of the closest and most loyal partners of the United States in Europe.” He has publicly called for increased pressure on the four NATO member states — Spain, Greece, Romania, and Slovakia — that have yet to recognize Kosovo, arguing that this hinders the country’s Euro-Atlantic integration.

Even more significant is the fact that he has proposed concrete political measures in Congress, including an amendment to suspend IMET funding for Greece due to its non-recognition of Kosovo.

Equally important is the resolution introduced by Keith Self, together with Ritchie Torres and Mike Lawler, supporting Kosovo’s membership in NATO.

As Russia continues to destabilize the region through its proxies, tensions in the Balkans remain high, and Europe’s security architecture is being reshaped following the war in Ukraine, Kosovo’s integration into NATO is not merely in Kosovo’s interest — it is a strategic interest of the West.

Keith Self himself has referred to the Balkans as a “powder keg,” warning that without lasting stability in the region, Europe remains vulnerable.

Therefore, this visit comes at a moment when Kosovo must clarify its strategic direction, strengthen coordination with the United States, and move more decisively toward Euro-Atlantic integration.

On this journey, America remains Kosovo’s political and strategic compass.

Just as in the 1990s, when American senators witnessed the truth about Kosovo and brought it to the center of U.S. policymaking, today the visit of American congressmen is proof that the Kosovo–U.S. relationship is more than a political alliance — it is a historical bond and a vision for the future.

Once, Kosovo Albanians chanted “USA… USA” in the squares of Prishtina, seeking help for survival. Today, Kosovo is a free state.

Yet the struggle for international consolidation, NATO membership, new recognitions, and the protection of Albanians across the region continues.

In this context, the visit of Keith Self and Suhas Subramanyam is a continuation of a story that began long ago — a story in which America and Kosovo walk together to bear witness to, and defend, the truth about Albanians everywhere.

Vizita bipartizane e kongresistëve amerikanë, dëshmi e angazhimit të vazhdueshëm të SHBA-ve për shqiptarët

Nga të gjitha vizitat ndërkombëtare që janë bërë në Kosovë në dekadat e fundit, pak prej tyre bartin simbolikën, peshën politike dhe mesazhin strategjik, sikurse vizita e dy kongresistëve amerikanë, Keith Self (republikan) dhe Suhas Subramanyam (demokrat). Kjo vizitë do të zhvillohet me kërkesë të organizatës Albanians for America dhe është sinjal i qartë dhe i fuqishëm i mbështetjes bipartizane amerikane në një kohë kur rajoni ynë përballet me sfida të mëdha sigurie dhe zhvillimi.

Vizita vjen në një kohë përcaktuese për Kosovën. Për pak ditë, qytetarët e Kosovës do t`i drejtohen kutive të votimit, porse cilido që të jetë rezultati, raporti me SHBA-të do të vazhdojë të jetë krucial për rrugën euroatlantike të Kosovës.

Për Kosovën, mbështetja amerikane vazhdon të mbetet mbi partitë, mbi administratat dhe mbi ciklet politike. Prandaj, kjo vizitë ka premisa historike sidomos në raport me pjesën e vizitës në Luginën e Preshevës dhe në njëfarë mënyrë rikthen në mendje vizitën që ndodhi gjatë viteve të 90-ta të një delegacioni amerikan në Prishtinë.
Më 29 gusht 1990, delegacioni i udhëhequr nga Bob Dole, së bashku me senatorët John Warner, Jake Garn, Don Nickles, Al D'Amato, Steve Symms dhe Connie Mack, pa nga afër brutalitetin e regjimit jugosllav në Kosovë. Ajo vizitë u bë pikë kthese historike. Nga Prishtina, e vërteta e Kosovës mori rrugën drejt Kongresit amerikan, në Shtëpinë e Bardhë dhe gjithandej në botën demokratike.

Shqiptarët, sërish kanë nevojë për të vërtetën e dëshmuar dhe mbrojtur nga SHBA-të.

Në Luginën e Preshevës, shqiptarët po përballen me forma drastike të shtypjes institucionale nga shteti serb. Pasivizimi i adresave të shqiptarëve, spastrimi administrativ, diskriminimi ekonomik dhe margjinalizimi politik janë metoda të sofistikuara për ta zbehur praninë shqiptare në atë rajon.
Ky proces, që ka prekur mijëra familje shqiptare, është një formë moderne e spastrimit etnik. Duke pasivizuar adresat, Beogradi po përpiqet të zvogëlojë artificialisht praninë shqiptare në Luginë.

Vizita e kongresistëve amerikanë në Preshevë është mesazh dhe dëshmi se Lugina nuk është harruar. Gjithashtu, është rikujtim se Washingtoni e ka vëmendjen ende në Ballkan.

Kongresisti Keith Self, muajt e fundit është shndërruar në një nga zërat më të fuqishëm në afirmimin e Kosovës dhe të drejtave të shqiptarëve në Luginë në Kongresin amerikan.
Self e ka quajtur Kosovën një partnere të ngushtë të Shteteve të Bashkuara në Evropë”. Ai ka kërkuar publikisht rritjen e presionit ndaj katër shteteve të NATO-s, Spanjës, Greqisë, Rumanisë dhe Sllovakisë, që ende nuk e kanë njohur Kosovën, duke argumentuar se kjo po pengon integrimin euro-atlantik të vendit.

Edhe më domethënës është fakti se ai ka propozuar masa konkrete politike në Kongres, përfshirë amendamentin për pezullimin e financimit IMET për Greqinë, pikërisht për shkak të mosnjohjes së Kosovës.

Po aq e rëndësishme është edhe rezoluta e paraqitur nga Keith Self, së bashku me Ritchie Torres dhe Mike Lawler, për mbështetjen e anëtarësimit të Kosovës në NATO.

Derisa Rusia vazhdon ta destabilizojë rajonin përmes satelitëve të saj, tensionet në Ballkan mbeten të ngritura dhe arkitektura e sigurisë evropiane po riformësohet pas luftës në Ukrainë, integrimi i Kosovës në NATO nuk është vetëm interes i Kosovës, por interes strategjik i Perëndimit.

Vetë Keith Self e ka quajtur Ballkanin fuqi baroti, duke paralajmëruar se pa stabilitet të qëndrueshëm në rajon, Evropa mbetet e cenueshme.

Prandaj kjo vizitë vjen në momentin kur Kosova duhet ta qartësojë drejtimin e saj strategjik, ta forcojë koordinimin me SHBA-të dhe të ecë më shpejt drejt integrimit euro-atlantik.

Në këtë rrugëtim, Amerika mbetet busulla politike dhe strategjike e Kosovës.

Ashtu si në vitet ’90, kur senatorët amerikanë panë të vërtetën e Kosovës dhe e prezantuan atë në qendër të politikës amerikane, edhe sot vizita e kongresistëve amerikanë është dëshmi se lidhja Kosovë–SHBA është aleancë politike, lidhje historike dhe perspektivë e ndritshme.

Dikur shqiptarët e Kosovës brohorisnin “USA… USA”, në sheshet e Prishtinës, duke kërkuar ndihmë për mbijetesë, por sot Kosova është shtet i lirë.

Beteja për konsolidim ndërkombëtar, për NATO, për njohje të reja dhe për mbrojtjen e shqiptarëve në rajon vazhdon ende.

Në këtë kontekst, vizita e Keith Self dhe Suhas Subramanyam është vazhdim i një historie që filloi shumë kohë më parë. I një historie ku Amerika dhe Kosova ecin bashkë për të dëshmuar dhe për ta mbrojtur të vërtetën për shqiptarët, kudo.

The bipartisan delegation of the United States Congress, composed of Congressmen Keith Self and Suhas Subramanyam, visited the Presheva Valley today. The congressmen met with Albanian political and institutional representatives to gain firsthand insight into the position and challenges faced by Albanians in Presheva, Bujanoc, and Medvegjë.

During the visit, the American congressmen held meetings with Albanian representative in the Serbian Parliament, Shaip Kamberi, the Mayor of Bujanoc, Arbër Pajaziti, and the Mayor of Presheva, Ardita Sinani.

The discussions focused on the challenges faced by Albanians in the Presheva Valley, including the passive deregistration of residential addresses, lack of integration into Serbian state institutions, non-recognition of diplomas issued in Kosovo, restrictions on the use of the Albanian language, shortages of school textbooks, and inequalities in economic and institutional development.

Congressman Keith Self emphasized the importance of fair treatment of minorities and underlined that stability and prosperity in the region are closely linked to respect for human rights and minority communities.

“We have seen that there are real issues between Albanians and Serbia, as we already knew. However, we will also travel to Kosovo to learn about the Serbian minority there. So, we are visiting both places to understand how minorities are treated and what rights they have,” Self stated to the media following the meeting.

Meanwhile, Congressman Suhas Subramanyam stressed that issues such as education, unequal development, and the passive deregistration of addresses require serious institutional attention, emphasizing that Serbia must confront these problems if it aims to advance on its Euro-Atlantic path.

Representative Shaip Kamberi assessed that the visit by the American delegation represents an important step toward the internationalization of the issues affecting Albanians in the Presheva Valley, highlighting the lack of Albanian representation within state institutions and citizens’ mistrust toward those institutions.

During the meetings, appreciation was expressed for the continued support of the United States toward the Presheva Valley over recent decades, as well as for the engagement of American congressmen regarding initiatives in the U.S. Congress addressing the rights of Albanians in Serbia.

In this context, participants also referred to the legislation initiated by Congressman Keith Self in the House Foreign Affairs Committee, which calls for comprehensive reporting on the condition of minorities in Serbia, with a particular focus on Albanians in the Presheva Valley.

Those involved in the discussions emphasized that American presence and support remain essential for preserving stability, advancing democracy, and guaranteeing equal rights for all citizens in the region.

Kongresistët Self dhe Subramanyam kërkojnë që Serbia t`i adresojë problemet reale te shqiptarëve të Luginës së Preshevës

Delegacioni bipartizan i Kongresit të Shteteve të Bashkuara të Amerikës, i përbërë nga kongresistët Keith Self dhe Suhas Subramanyam, zhvilloi sot vizitë në Luginën e Preshevës. Kongresistët u takuan me përfaqësues politikë dhe institucionalë shqiptarë për t’u njohur nga afër me pozitën dhe sfidat me të cilat përballen shqiptarët në Preshevë, Bujanoc dhe Medvegjë.

Gjatë vizitës, kongresistët amerikanë zhvilluan takime me deputetin shqiptar në Kuvendin e Serbisë, Shaip Kamberi, me kryetarin e Komunës së Bujanocit, Arbër Pajaziti, dhe kryetaren e Komunës së Preshevës, Ardita Sinani.

Në fokus të diskutimeve ishin sfidat me të cilat përballen shqiptarët në Luginën e Preshevës, përfshirë pasivizimin e adresave, mungesën e integrimit në institucionet shtetërore të Serbisë, mosnjohjen e diplomave nga Kosova, kufizimet në përdorimin e gjuhës shqipe, mungesën e teksteve shkollore dhe pabarazinë në zhvillimin ekonomik e institucional.

Kongresisti Keith Self theksoi rëndësinë e trajtimit të drejtë të pakicave dhe nënvizoi se stabiliteti dhe prosperiteti në rajon janë të lidhura ngushtë me respektimin e të drejtave të njeriut dhe të komuniteteve pakicë.

“Kemi parë se ka probleme reale mes shqiptarëve dhe Serbisë, siç edhe e kemi ditur. Por, do të shkojmë edhe në Kosovë për të mësuar për pakicën serbe atje. Pra, po i vizitojmë të dyja vendet për të kuptuar se si trajtohen pakicat dhe cilat janë të drejtat e tyre”, ka deklaruar Self për media, pas takimit.

Ndërkaq, kongresisti Suhas Subramanyam potencoi se çështje si arsimi, zhvillimi i pabarabartë dhe pasivizimi i adresave kërkojnë adresim serioz institucional, duke theksuar se Serbia duhet të përballet me këto probleme nëse synon të ecë përpara në rrugën euroatlantike.

Deputeti Shaip Kamberi vlerësoi se vizita e delegacionit amerikan paraqet një hap të rëndësishëm drejt ndërkombëtarizimit të çështjes së shqiptarëve në Luginën e Preshevës, duke theksuar mungesën e përfaqësimit të shqiptarëve në institucionet shtetërore dhe mosbesimin e qytetarëve ndaj këtyre institucioneve.

Gjatë takimeve u shpreh mirënjohje për mbështetjen e vazhdueshme të Shteteve të Bashkuara të Amerikës ndaj Luginës së Preshevës gjatë dekadave të fundit, si dhe për angazhimin e kongresistëve amerikanë lidhur me iniciativat në Kongresin amerikan që trajtojnë të drejtat e shqiptarëve në Serbi.

Në këtë kontekst u përmend edhe projektligji i iniciuar nga kongresisti Keith Self në Komitetin për Politikë të Jashtme të Dhomës së Përfaqësuesve, i cili kërkon raportim gjithëpërfshirës mbi gjendjen e pakicave në Serbi, me fokus të veçantë te shqiptarët në Luginën e Preshevës.

Bashkëbiseduesit theksuan se prania dhe mbështetja amerikane mbeten thelbësore për ruajtjen e stabilitetit, avancimin e demokracisë dhe garantimin e të drejtave të barabarta për të gjithë qytetarët në rajon.
