Tired of the “separation of church and state” crowd?

Our founders were brilliant people in the right place, doing the right thing for themselves and their posterity (i.e. Us). One thing they didn’t anticipate however is the all out assault on religion and churches in America. Given that our country was first settled by the Pilgrims seeking religious freedom and that we were settled by waves of God fearing people, it’s important to note that “church” was just a way of life for them. The only thing they sought to avoid was another Church of England set up that required allegiance to the King’s church.

AT NO TIME did our founders expect for churches to play no part in the operation of our country.

Let’s take a look at the First Amendment.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion (like the King’s Church of England),

or prohibiting the free exercise thereof (like the churches of the time that proliferated our country);

or abridging the freedom of speech (as is demonstrated in churches),

or of the press;

or the right of the people peaceably to assemble (in churches and elsewhere),

and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances (whether church related or not).

“Separation of church and state” is simply not in the constitution and the people who argue such lean heavily on the “Establishment Clause”. However, that is a bogus argument when addressing the involvement of pastors, congregations and churches in the ongoing operation of our governments.

Truth be told, churches have been able to do this the entire time IF they were the “right kind” of churches. Political involvement has long been a function of the AME churches. This just levels the playing field.

Happy Fourth of July, Greensboro!

Today, we celebrate not just our nation's birthday but the enduring values that continue to guide us forward as a community.

As we gather with family and friends to watch fireworks and share good food, I'm reminded that the spirit of 1776 lives on in each of us. Our founders believed in the power of ordinary people to do extraordinary things when we work together. That same spirit is alive and well right here in Greensboro.

Every day, I see neighbors helping neighbors, volunteers stepping up to make a difference, and citizens who refuse to sit on the sidelines when our community needs them most. That's the kind of active citizenship that keeps our democracy strong and our city moving forward.

As your next City Council member, I'm committed to bringing that same collaborative spirit to local government – listening to all voices, building bridges across our diverse community, and never forgetting that public service is, indeed, service to you and your families.

Today, let's celebrate our shared values of liberty, opportunity, and community. Tomorrow, let's get back to the work of building the Greensboro we all deserve.
