This week, my white Republican colleagues passed their Jim Crow gerrymander and brought us backwards in history. The maps cracked Black voters and sent a chilling message: YOUR VOICE, YOUR VOTE DOES NOT MATTER. What we saw at the Tennessee State Capitol was a klan rally with suits, where a white Republican supermajority abused their power to dismantle the voting power of Black people across this state. Tennessee and the South are the frontlines of our democracy, and if we do not make a stand here, everything our Civil Rights martyrs fought for will be lost. This is about the fight for multiracial democracy across this country, and so goes the South as goes the nation. We must continue to sound the alarm. We must continue to confront the new confederacy.
