AFOP empowers America's farmworkers through career training, education, and health and safety programs.

By breaking the cycle of poverty, we safeguard America's food system and build stronger, more resilient communities. Most farmworkers earn less than $10,000 per year from what is often backbreaking and dangerous labor. AFOP and its member organizations serve farmworkers in 49 states and Puerto Rico. We provide job training, pesticide and health safety education, emergency assistance, and an advoca

This Memorial Day, AFOP pauses to remember the courageous men and women who gave everything in service to our nation. Their sacrifice reminds us of the power of service, unity, and hope. May we honor their memory not only with gratitude, but by caring for one another, strengthening our communities, and continuing the work of building a brighter future for all.

Today, we remember. We honor.

For years, Berenice Sierra worked seasonal agricultural jobs to support her family. As a mother of two in Madera, she knew the challenges of long hours, unstable work, and uncertainty. But Berenice wanted a more stable future for herself and her children.

With support from Central Valley Opportunity Center, Inc. (CVOC), she enrolled in the General Business Occupations training program. Over 19 weeks, she learned Microsoft Office, Excel, basic math, English, and clerical office skills.

Balancing school, family, and daily life was not easy โ€” but Berenice stayed committed.

On September 5, 2025, she completed the program. On October 30, 2025, she began working with Valley Home Solutions Inc. as a Customer Service Representative, earning $16.50 per hour.

Bereniceโ€™s journey shows what is possible when farm workers have access to education, training, and support.

Garrett, a dedicated farmworker youth, is turning determination into opportunity through the National Farmworker Jobs Program (NFJP). Currently pursuing an associateโ€™s degree in agriculture alongside a welding certificate at Ivy Tech Community College, Garrett is building stackable skills that bridge two critical industries. From crop production and soil management to advanced welding techniques, heโ€™s creating a powerful path toward a stable, hands-on career. With support from NFJP and his Proteus, Indiana Career Coach, Miriam,

Garrett received assistance with tuition and essential toolsโ€”removing financial barriers and allowing him to focus on his education and training fully. Set to graduate in May 2026, Garrett has already earned the Deanโ€™s Award and recognition as an Outstanding Studentโ€”a testament to his leadership, excellence, and drive. But Garrettโ€™s journey doesnโ€™t stop there. Heโ€™s committed to giving back and is planning to use his skills to strengthen local industries and support his community.

Did you know the National Farmworker Jobs Program (NFJP) helps provide housing for agricultural workers? Farmworker housing is a serious issue. Low wages often make it impossible to afford safe, stable homes near work, forcing many families into overcrowded or substandard conditionsโ€”sometimes without basic protections. In rural communities, limited housing options and zoning barriers only make things worse. Thatโ€™s where NFJP steps in. By funding services that expand access to safe, sanitary temporary and permanent housing, NFJP supports migrant and seasonal farmworkers and their families when they need it most.
Itโ€™s one more way NFJP is part of the solution.

AFOP mourns the passing of Pharis Harvey, a steadfast advocate for farmworkers, labor rights, and social justice whose impact will be felt for generations to come. Throughout his life, Pharis worked tirelessly to protect vulnerable workers and children, helping to build stronger systems of accountability and dignity for those too often overlooked.

His compassion, wisdom, and unwavering commitment inspired so many across the labor and human rights community. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Pharisโ€™s family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.

We are deeply grateful for his legacy and honored to continue the work of advancing justice for farmworker communities in the spirit he helped shape.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Pharis Harvey, a visionary champion for labor rights, social justice, and one of the founding co-chairs of the Child Labor Coalition. His lifelong dedication to protecting workers and children shaped movements around the world and leaves a legacy that will continue to guide this work for generations.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Pharisโ€™s family, loved ones, and all who had the honor of working alongside him. We are forever grateful for the foundation he helped build and will carry his mission forward with love and resolve.

NFJP practitioners go the distanceโ€”literally. They travel across entire service areas, showing up early mornings, late evenings, weekendsโ€”wherever farmworkers are. From labor camps to churches, they meet people where they are, connecting with those working toward a better life for themselves and their families.

Thatโ€™s not just outreach.
Thatโ€™s dedication.
Thatโ€™s commitment.
Thatโ€™s changing lives.
