James Sauls, chief of staff to Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) today released the following statement on the senator’s passing:
Sadly, Senator Feinstein passed away last night at her home in Washington, D.C. Her passing is a great loss for so many, from those who loved and cared for her to the people of California that she dedicated her life to serving.
Senator Feinstein never backed away from a fight for what was just and right. At the same time, she was always willing to work with anyone, even those she disagreed with, if it meant bettering the lives of Californians or the betterment of our nation.
There are few women who can be called senator, chairman, mayor, wife, mom and grandmother. Senator Feinstein was a force of nature who made an incredible impact on our country and her home state.
She left a legacy that is undeniable and extraordinary. There is much to say about who she was and what she did, but for now, we are going to grieve the passing of our beloved boss, mentor and friend.

I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Tony Bennett. The world lost a wonderfully talented musician who inspired millions, San Francisco lost a beloved champion and I lost a dear friend.
Tony was a true New Yorker but he was also an adopted son of San Francisco. From riding the cable cars to celebrate their renovation to uplifting us by leading a city-wide singing of ‘I Left My Heart in San Francisco’ during the pandemic, Tony’s love and support for San Francisco have been felt for decades.
In fact, a painting of us riding the cable cars together still hangs in my Senate office. I cherish the friendship I’ve shared with Tony and his wife Susan, a fellow San Franciscan. My thoughts are with her and their family during this difficult time.
Tony was above all else a kind and generous person who was loved by so many and whose music transcended generations. His heart will forever be in San Francisco and ours will forever be with him.
It’s reprehensible that Republican governors are callously sending migrants, including families with minors, to California just to score cheap political points with their base.
Many of these families are fleeing horrendous conditions in their home countries. They deserve to be met with compassion while seeking asylum, not to be treated as political pawns.
Despite Governor Abbott’s claim, sending migrants from one border state to another will do nothing to alleviate the situation at the border. I’m proud to see California stepping up to help these families as they arrive.
I encourage the Biden administration to continue to investigate these flights and bus trips to see if any laws are being broken. This cruelty is beneath us as Americans, and one way or another, it must stop.
As you celebrate this Memorial Day, take a moment to honor the brave men and women of our armed forces who gave what President Lincoln called “the last full measure of devotion” in service to our nation.

The Senate continues to swiftly confirm highly qualified individuals to the federal judiciary, including seven more judicial nominees who were confirmed this week. There has been no slowdown.
This includes the confirmation of Judge Wesley Hsu to the Central District of California. He will make an outstanding jurist and I’m proud to see him join the federal bench.
While the Senate Judiciary Committee has advanced eight strong nominees during my absence, I’m disappointed that Republicans on the committee are blocking a few from moving forward. I’m confident that when I return to the Senate, we will be able to move the remaining qualified nominees out of committee quickly and to the Senate floor for a vote.

It’s appalling that a single federal judge in Texas is attempting to stop the use of an abortion drug that has been safely used for more than 20 years. This ruling would effectively deny patients access to medication abortion in every state – even in states like California where abortion remains legal.
The science is clear: mifepristone – in combination with a second drug – has allowed more than 5 million women to receive abortion care since it was first approved in 2000. Medication abortions now account for more than half of all abortions in the United States and the two-drug mifepristone combination is widely considered to be safer than other alternatives. There were no health concerns to block access now.
But this ruling wasn’t about the safety of the drug or protecting patients. This was clearly about overriding the FDA’s processes and expertise to attack women’s reproductive rights. Science, not an extreme right-wing ideology, should determine which drugs are available to women seeking an abortion.
This ruling has thankfully not gone into effect. There is a conflicting ruling in Washington state and the Justice Department has announced it will appeal this latest effort to deny patients access to reproductive health care.
I’m proud to join them in that fight.

Opinion: Solving the worsening drought in the western states will require all of us working together We will need all seven states to commit to making the politically difficult — but necessary — decisions about water usage in their states.

I am announcing today I will not run for reelection in 2024 but intend to accomplish as much for California as I can through the end of next year when my term ends. Even with a divided Congress, we can still pass bills that will improve lives.
Each of us was sent here to solve problems. That’s what I’ve done for the last 30 years, and that’s what I plan to do for the next two years. My thanks to the people of California for allowing me to serve them.
