Carolina Allspice (Calycanthus floridus) 🌿🌸This flower is known for its deep maroon, star-shaped flowers, as well as a spicy and fruity scent. This native shrub adds beauty and aroma to the stream valley of Dumbarton Oaks Park. In addition to its beauty and fragrance, the flowers' foliage and welcoming surface area provide valuable habitat for insects, as well as shelter for smaller wildlife, overall contributing to the health and biodiversity of the ecosystem.
🌟 Fun Fact: Early American settlers used this plant’s bark as a cinnamon substitute, awarding it the nickname of “sweetshrub” or “spicebush”! 🍂🍥 The Carolina Allspice is another example of Beatrix Farrand’s legacy, as it blends aesthetic appeal with ecological value.🐛🦋🌼
