As part of my America 250 tour, I visited Jamestown — the site of America’s first permanent English settlement, founded in 1607. Jamestown marks the beginning of a story of perseverance, representative government, and the foundations of our nation.

To celebrate America’s 250th birthday, I’ve been traveling across Virginia’s First District to visit the historic places that shaped our nation’s story. One of my first stops was Colonial Williamsburg — the restored capital of colonial Virginia, where patriots debated the future of liberty and self-government. As we approach our nation’s 250th anniversary, Williamsburg reminds us of the courage and vision that built America.

It was great to join volunteers for Clean the Bay Day with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and community partners across Virginia earlier this month. Protecting the Chesapeake Bay is vital to Virginia’s environment, economy, and way of life, and I’m grateful to everyone who came out to make a difference. Together, we can ensure the Bay remains healthy and thriving for generations to come.

This week, I had the opportunity to speak with realtors in the First District about the challenges facing current and prospective homeowners. Every Virginian and American deserves the opportunity to own a home, and I am working to make that a reality.

Recently, I went out in the field with All Points Broadband — a Richmond-based rural broadband provider focused on bringing access to underserved areas of Virginia and nearby states — to talk to folks in the community about broadband challenges and opportunities. What I heard was clear: We must work to identify ways states and localities can partner with the federal government to better focus resources on underserved areas and expand access to reliable broadband service.
