Mary House

It began with one house and one family. Today Mary House provides transitional housing, food, and support to immigrant and refugee families in DC & MD.

The measure we care about is not how long a family stays - but how ready they are when they leave. Based in Northeast Washington D.C., we work predominantly with families displaced by war and extreme poverty, including the low-income Latin American population. While we began in 1981 as a way to address the housing needs of one family, Mary House has grown into an established support program within

My dad doesn't just tell you how. He shows you. At 75 and going strong, I'm following his lead. πŸ’ͺ

Both of my parents are still working around the clock for this mission and you can see exactly what I mean in this photo. Mary House opens doors for immigrant and refugee families in the DC area to a safe home, a welcoming community, and the opportunity to build a life.

We have 13 properties and that means 13 sites to maintain. We are a team of 8 with a small but mighty group of volunteers. If you want to roll up your sleeves with us this summer, send me a message.

We create space for kids to breathe, feel safe, and kick their feet up.

🌿 The green roof on top of Regina Maria is starting to bloom.

Meet Juan β€” one of the incredible people who helped build our newest site, and proud to show it off. Most people never get to see it up here, so we're bringing it to you. Regina Maria was dedicated as a living memorial to Pope Francis, and named for his mother. Earlier this year, it opened its doors to 12 families in the heart of Brookland.

From the ground up, this building was built with care. We think it shows.

Thank you to the Alpha Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority at Howard University for donating pantry and personal essentials to Mary House families.

Small acts like this make a big difference in the daily lives of the families we serve. 🌺

Happy Earth Day 🌍

On Earth Day, we're reminded that nurturing living things β€” trees, children, communities β€” takes time, consistency, and love.

🌱 April showers bring May flowers β€” and at Mary House, we're growing something magical!

Our After-School Program kids have been hard at work transforming our space into a living, breathing garden β€” from the roots and worms underground all the way up to the leaves and light above. Every inch of these walls was made by little hands with big imaginations.

And we're just getting started. Next week, watch our garden come fully alive with flowers, bees, and butterflies! πŸŒΈπŸπŸ¦‹

Proud of every single one of our young artists and the incredible staff who nurture them every day. This is what learning looks like at Mary House. πŸ’š

πŸŽ‰ We are still on cloud nine from last night!

Mary House was selected by Brookhaven School in Montgomery County as a recipient through The Giving Square β€” a nonprofit that teaches kids the joy and power of giving. Their students research causes, vote on organizations they believe in, and raise real money to make an impact.

These young philanthropists chose us β€” and attending their Kids for Kids Celebration was an absolute honor. πŸ’›

Thank you, Brookhaven. Thank you, The Giving Square. The next generation of changemakers is already here. πŸ™Œ
