Five years ago today, the House passed the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.

Since then, the Supreme Court gutted Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, emboldening Texas Republicans to redraw my district and those of my Democratic colleagues to favor them and silence thousands of voters across the state.

We cannot let them have the last word. Congress must restore and strengthen the Voting Rights Act.

The right to vote is under attack. As we commemorate the enactment of the Voting Rights Act, we must remember that the fight for freedom is not yet over. It’s time for Congress to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and end the era of voter suppression once and for all.
