Employers in the janitorial, landscaping, and security services industries can strengthen compliance and support workers by following a few key best practices.

The Wage and Hour Division encourages employers to:
1️⃣ Train managers on recordkeeping and wage requirements under the Fair Labor Standards Act
2️⃣ Educate workers about their rights and available resources
3️⃣ Create ways for employees to report concerns without fear of retaliation
4️⃣ Be mindful of break time requirements and compensable work time
5️⃣ Ensure proper deductions for uniforms and related expenses
6️⃣ Count all hours worked correctly, including compensable travel time between job sites
7️⃣ Understand how bonuses impact overtime calculations

Strong workplace practices help employers stay compliant while ensuring employees receive the wages and protections they’ve earned. Learn more about wage and hour compliance resources: https://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/building-services-best-practices

Good recordkeeping isn’t just good business. It’s required by law. Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, employers are required to keep accurate records of hours worked and wages paid for all covered employees. This includes the employee’s:
• Full name, address, and occupation,
• Hours worked each day and each workweek,
• Total straight-time and overtime earnings, and
• All deductions from or additions to wages.
These records must be retained for at least two to three years, depending on the type of record, and must be available for inspection by the Wage and Hour Division.
Why does it matter? Incomplete or inaccurate records make it harder to verify that workers are being paid what they’re owed. When records are missing, employers may have a harder time defending against wage claims.
💡 Proactive compliance protects workers and your business.
