Representative Laura Friedman (D-CA) delivered remarks at the 111th Armenian Genocide commemoration on Capitol Hill.

“Walking through Artsakh, the Armenian history that is in every church, every building, every mountain, every field in that nation is undeniable. And the thought of the cultural erasure that is going on right now in plain view of the world is heartbreaking and completely unacceptable. You have my pledge to continue standing alongside you, with the rest of the Armenian Caucus here in Congress... to make sure that what is an obvious threat to Armenia itself from its neighbors cannot be acted on, and that the United States is there for our ally, for Armenia.”

The 111th Armenian Genocide Commemoration in Times Square, New York, brought together thousands of Armenians and non-Armenians in remembrance of the 1.5 million Armenian Genocide Holy Martyrs.

Organized by The Knights and Daughters of Vartan and co-sponsored by leading Armenian American organizations, including the Armenian Assembly of America, this year’s commemoration centered on the theme “Carrying the Past and Claiming the Future,” honoring ancestral Armenian roots while looking toward the future of Armenian advocacy on Capitol Hill and beyond.

Armenian Assembly of America Executive Director Bryan Ardouny delivered remarks during the program, alongside Congressman Frank Pallone Jr. (D-NJ), Co-Chair of the Congressional Armenian Caucus, and other civic, scholarly, clergy, and community leaders.

Masters of Ceremonies Lucine Beylerian, an Armenian Assembly Terjenian-Thomas Intern alumna, Chantelle Nasri, and Nairi Diratsouian led the event, which also featured remarks from genocide prevention scholar Dr. Henry Theriault, Dr. Jesse Arlen, Director of the Krikor and Clara Zohrab Information Center, representatives of major Armenian American organizations, and cultural performances.

Congressman Vince Fong (R-CA) delivered remarks at the 111th Armenian Genocide commemoration on Capitol Hill.

“Recognition and accountability are essential if we are to prevent future atrocities. Commemoration must be paired with action. That responsibility is especially urgent in light of recent events. The forced displacement of more than 120,000 Armenians from Artsakh in 2023 reflects a continuing pattern of violence that demands a strong and immediate response. We must call for the immediate release of Armenian hostages, including Artsakh’s leaders, whose unlawful detention and reported mistreatment remain a barrier to lasting peace.”

On April 24, Assembly Co-Chair Talin Yacoubian, intern alumni, staff, and advocates attended the 111th Anniversary Commemoration of the Armenian Genocide at the Armenian Genocide Martyrs Monument in Montebello, California.

The greater Los Angeles community program featured remarks from elected officials, students, and organizers, and special cultural performances of song and dance. Assembly staff and advocates also caught up with State Senator Bob Archuleta (SD-30), who represents the Armenian Genocide Martyrs Monument, State Assemblymember Mark Gonzalez (AD-54), State Assemblymember Nick Schultz (AD-44), and Glendale Mayor Ardy Kassakhian

The Assembly placed a wreath at the 58-year monument, named a State Historic Landmark last year, and designed by H. Hrant Agbabian, the brother of Assembly founding member and past Co-Chair Dr. Mihran Agbabian.

Congressman Gabe Amo (D-RI) delivered remarks at the 111th Armenian Genocide commemoration on Capitol Hill.

“It’s important to speak to the scale of a million and a half innocent lives. It’s essential that we never fail to tell the story of the Armenian Genocide because that’s how we ensure that it is not repeated and never repeated. And so I’m proud to support the Armenian Genocide Education Act that would promote education and understanding of this horrific tragedy. It is incumbent on us to make sure that our young people have in their minds a sense of what happens when there is indifference. When there is a desire to hurt. To harm. To erase.”

Congressman Jim Costa (D-CA) delivered remarks at the 111th Armenian Genocide commemoration on Capitol Hill.

“Your efforts are critical. And our efforts to cosponsor the Armenian Genocide Education Act. Why? Because education is important. Requiring the Library of Congress to maintain a public website and support educational initiatives to ensure that this history is never ever forgotten. Because it matters.”

Congresswoman Luz Rivas (D-CA) delivered remarks at the 111th Armenian Genocide commemoration on Capitol Hill.

“We remember the Armenian Genocide not only to honor the past, but to shape a more just future. If we fail to recognize what happened 111 years ago or why these tragedies transpired in the way that they did, we will not be able to prevent future atrocities from happening.”
