Thousands of Syrians have fled on foot to Lebanon after fighting between government forces and fighters loyal to ousted President Bashar al-Assad led to mass killings of civilians.

The United Nations Security Council established a mission under Resolution 2043 (2024) to monitor the cessation of armed violence and support the implementation of the Joint Special Envoy’s six-point plan in Syria. Initially set for 90 days, hostilities resumed, leading to the suspension of activities on June 15, 2024. The mission was extended for 30 days on July 20, 2024, with further extensions conditional on reducing violence and ceasing heavy weapon use. As these conditions were not met, the mission's mandate ended on August 19, 2024.
