Yesterday, my office had the pleasure of announcing the 2022 Congressional App Challenge first place winners. A huge congratulations to North Oconee High School students Anyo Li, Viveka Mehrotra, and Jack Rumpf of “Team Coexist”! Together, these three outstanding students created an app to help users locate local places of worship.

It is an honor to recognize the hard work of these young folks, as well as our runner-up, Joshua Moreland of Newton County Career Academy. To say I was impressed by the applications this year would be an understatement.

Congratulations again, Team Coexist! Well done.

Today we pause to honor all the brave men and women who have served our nation and defended the freedoms we hold so dearly. To their families, your sacrifices do not go unnoticed and the country thanks you for supporting our soldiers. America has remained the greatest country in the world because of our military.

On Thursday, I was joined by nearly all of my fellow Georgia Congressional Delegation Members in a resolution honoring the life of University of Georgia (UGA) Coach Vince Dooley.

An incredible athlete and a legendary leader, Coach Dooley led the Georgia Bulldogs to six SEC championships, was voted “SEC Coach of the Year” five times, and a national championship for UGA. He built the Bulldogs program into what it is today, shaping the lives of countless people along the way. Coach Dooley served his state in several other ways, including as a Georgia Historical Society Trustee. It was a pleasure working with my friend Coach Dooley over the years, most recently to preserve the American Revolutionary War Kettle Creek battlefield site. He has undoubtedly left a lasting impact on the Great State of Georgia’s history, people, and culture.

Thank you again to my colleagues for their support in honoring Coach Dooley's legacy.

The state of Georgia lost a legend today.

Coach Dooley embodied what it means to be a Georgia Bulldog, and proudly led the team to 6 SEC titles!

It was a beautiful autumn morning last Thursday as we celebrated Kettle Creek Battlefield and its designation as an affiliated area of the National Park Service (NPS). Surrounded by historic preservationists and community leaders, we commemorated the landmark battle that took place in Wilkes County, Georgia on February 14, 1779.

I was honored to be joined by NPS liaison Tracy Stakely, Member of the Board of Trustees for the American Battlefield Trust America Chris Welton, Chairman of the Kettle Creek Battlefield Association Walker Chewning, and many other community members and leaders.

America’s preserved battlefields stand as magnificent memorials to our Nation’s history and the courage of those individuals who gave the “last full measure of devotion” to our country. People who visit these historical sites cannot help but walk away with a greater appreciation of the sacrifices necessary to secure the freedoms we enjoy today. I am proud to have been a part of this special occasion, and I give my heartfelt appreciation to those individuals that made this moment possible.
