I am proud to announce Morgan Wade, a sophomore at West Charlotte High School, as the winner of the 2026 Congressional Art Competition representing North Carolina’s 12th Congressional District.
Wade’s award-winning piece, African Basquiat, an Acrylic and Polly paint masterpiece was unveiled during the Grand Opening Exhibition Sunday, May 17, 2026, at Mint Museum Uptown at Levine Center for the Arts in Charlotte.
During the Education and Workforce Committee markup today, I proposed an amendment to the CHARLIE Act, ensuring that the censorship bill could not be used to prevent the teaching of the horrors of slavery in American classrooms.
The concern with this bill is that it's broad and politically charged. Language may create confusion for schools and teachers. We have been warned that this bill may limit what history can be taught in classrooms and may influence local decisions about instructional materials and teacher preparation because schools do not want to risk federal funding.
As a retired educator for 40 years, I know what happens when politicians write vague restrictions and teachers are left to interpret them. We should not put teachers in a position where they have to wonder whether an honest lesson about slavery, Jim crow segregation, redlining, or the civil rights movement could be labeled political or divisive.
This amendment does not require any school to adopt a particular curriculum. It does not tell states or local districts how to teach. It does not force one political viewpoint into the classroom. It simply says that that nothing in this bill, nothing in this bill, should be used to stop schools from teaching the horrors of slavery in American history.
Republican committee members opposed this amendment, and without it, I opposed the CHARLIE Act.
It's becoming more and more common for hospitals to buy up private physician practices. Studies have found that following a private practice's consolidation with a hospital, the healthcare costs at this facility often go up, and many hospitals receive a higher facility-based reimbursement for services provided at these outpatient facilities.
This happens despite the fact that outpatient sites do not have the same overhead costs as a hospital. For many patients, this means less affordable health care options in their community.
Yesterday in the Education and Workforce Committee, I was proud to support the Transparency and Billing Act to establish transparency in claims data and take the first step in creating fair pricing for patient care services.

There are no established protocols for postpartum physical therapy rehabilitation, and that needs to change. I'm co-sponsoring H.R. 4074 because our mothers deserve better.

A century of underfunding and financial neglect from state and federal governments have left the vast majority of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) with aging laboratories, deteriorating dormitories, outdated equipment, and crumbling infrastructure.
This bipartisan legislation, H.R. 8791, would authorize federal investments to rebuild and modernize aging campus infrastructure at HBCUs across the United States.
On May 14th, 2026, I introduced this bill alongside Representative French Hill, Senator Tim Scott, and Senator Chris C***s.

The Supreme Court has issued an emergency stay on the Louisiana v. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Fifth Circuit decision regarding access to the drug Mifepristone.
On Monday, May 4, I filed an amicus brief with over 250 of my Democratic colleagues in Congress urging the Supreme Court to overturn the decision of the Fifth Circuit.
States cannot be allowed to walk back protections that women have fought to secure for decades.
The FDA’s rigorous congressionally mandated, evidence-based process for drug regulations has approved Mifepristone’s use and their studies confirm the drug is safe regardless of how it is dispensed. Reinstating in-person dispensation requirements for Mifepristone severely limits access to the most common methods of early, safe abortion.
I have spent my career fighting for women’s access to safe and effective reproductive healthcare. For 50 years, women have been able to take control of their own bodies, and since the Dobbs decision, that control is being taken away.
Women deserve healthcare, and abortion care is healthcare. This lower court decision cannot stand.

Requiring proof of intent to discriminate in states with documented histories of racial voter suppression is not 'legal interpretation.' It is judicial activism and willful blindness.
