The "smell of space" is actually a chemical reaction. In low Earth orbit, single atoms of oxygen stick to the outside of space suits and tools. When astronauts re-enter the station and these atoms mix with the cabin's oxygen, they "combust" (oxidize), creating that sharp, metallic scent.
