Standing in a doorway isn’t the safest place during an earthquake. Experts recommend taking cover under a sturdy table or desk to protect yourself from falling debris. If no shelter is nearby, move to an interior wall, away from windows and wall fixtures, and cover your head and neck with your arms. Most doorways aren’t any stronger than the rest of your home.

A home is only as strong as the foundation beneath it.

The foundation is the part of a building that supports the entire structure– typically made of concrete or masonry in residential construction. If your foundation is weak, an earthquake retrofit can make a major difference in safety and stability. The California Residential Mitigation Program (CRMP) successfully assists homeowners in this process.

The Earthquake Soft-Story (ESS) retrofit grant program is designed to make it easier for California homeowners to retrofit their single-family homes. This is especially important in earthquake-prone areas of the state that have lots of soft-story buildings, such as in Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Homes built before 1980 are more vulnerable to earthquake damage—but an Earthquake Brace + Bolt (EBB) retrofit can make a huge difference. EBB helps you strengthen your older home before a quake strikes, reducing damage and improving safety.
