The Muslim Civic Coalition continues our statewide listening tour, with recent stops in McLean County and Peoria!

On Friday, October 2, we joined the community at the Islamic Center of McLean County in Bloomington-Normal for Jummah, GOTV tabling, and a civic justice workshop. The following day, we spent time in Peoria meeting local partners, touring community institutions, and listening to community members during an evening listening session.

Thank you to everyone who welcomed us and shared their experiences and perspectives! 💚

“Yesterday before dawn, Homeland Security raided the home of a sitting Member of Congress and candidate for re-election — a U.S. citizen who has for years been targeted with racist, xenophobic attacks.

Let’s call this what it is: an attempt to punish and intimidate not only Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, but an attempt to punish and intimidate Black, Somali, Muslim, and immigrant communities just before the midterm elections.

How infuriating that this is another week in America.

But with my anger comes hope. Anger at the erosion of our democracy. Hope that our communities can salvage it.

Now is the time to speak out, show up, and vote for our future.”

— Amina Barhumi, Muslim Civic Coalition Executive Director

As the Muslim Civic Coalition continues engaging, representing, and empowering more communities across Illinois during a critical moment in civic life, it is proud to welcome Ayesha Ahmed as the new president of its Board of Directors. With the election of Ahmed, and in partnership with Executive Director Amina Barhumi, the board will continue to advance the community advocacy organization’s mission and set strategic priorities for its next chapter.

“I’m honored to step into this role at a time when the Muslim Civic Coalition is building on its strong foundation and thinking intentionally about what comes next to expand civic justice and build civic power across our state,” Ahmed said. “I look forward to working with our board, staff, and community to ensure Illinois Muslims and our neighbors always have a say in the decisions that impact our lives. In a defining moment for American Muslims and our democracy, our mission has never been more important.”

Today, Wadee should have turned 9 years old. A Palestinian American Muslim child, Wadee’s life was stolen by hate, the same hate that fuels genocide in Gaza. We remember Wadee and every Palestinian child denied their right to live, laugh, and grow.
