Mark your calendars, Wichita Falls! 📅

National Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week runs November 14–22, and we're getting ready for our biggest awareness push of the year right here in Texoma.

Every year, communities across the country come together during this week to see our neighbors experiencing homelessness and hunger as people, not statistics. Here at DignitySOS, it's a chance to share real stories from our mobile shower unit, bust the myths that keep neighbors from asking for help, and invite more of our community into this work.

Stay tuned for what we have planned: stories, facts, and simple ways YOU can show up for our neighbors. You won't want to miss it!

Save the dates: November 14–22. Let's make this week count for Wichita Falls. 💙

Every hot shower, every hygiene kit, every friendly hello at the trailer happens because volunteers show up. 💙

Our volunteer crew keeps the mobile shower unit rolling across Wichita Falls, hands out soap, shampoo, toothpaste and other essentials, and greets every neighbor with the respect they deserve. Some give a few hours a month, some help at every event, and every single one makes a difference.

New faces are always welcome! If you have been looking for a simple, hands-on way to serve your neighbors, this is it. No experience needed, just a caring heart and a little time.

Come join the crew: sign up to volunteer at dignitysos.org. Let's goooooo!

A thoughtful hygiene kit can offer more than supplies. It can share a little care, useful information, and a reminder that everybody deserves dignity. 💙

Penny’s new guide shares practical tips for building hygiene kits for homeless neighbors, making small choices that keep kits useful and respectful, and organizing hygiene drive ideas with your church, workplace, or community group.

A kit can also be a welcoming way to share information about free showers and other support services here in Texoma.

SNAP helps put groceries on the table, but it can’t be used to buy soap, shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant, toilet paper, or other hygiene essentials.

That gap can leave neighbors in Wichita Falls, including hard-working families, choosing between food and the basics that help them feel clean, comfortable, and ready for the day. Needing help is human, and everyone deserves dignity.

That’s why hygiene donations and supply drives matter so much to our DignitySOS neighbors. Your generosity helps make everyday essentials more accessible and reminds people they’re part of a caring community.

Donate hygiene supplies or give at dignitysos.org. Thank you for helping our neighbors reset and restore!

Dignity doesn’t take a season off. 💙

A significant cooldown is expected around October 28 in Wichita Falls, and the Texas Panhandle already saw its first freeze on October 16. As colder nights arrive, a hot shower and clean, dry clothes are about more than comfort. They can help protect health and safety. Wet or dirty clothes can pull heat away from the body, and cold nights are especially hard on neighbors already facing exposure.

That’s why DignitySOS keeps our mobile shower unit running as the weather turns, offering showers, hygiene supplies, and care with respect.

Help us get ready for cold season: give or volunteer at dignitysos.org. Every act of support helps our neighbors feel cared for and seen.

Wichita Falls is showing up for neighbors, and that’s something worth celebrating! 💙

In September, The Salvation Army of Wichita Falls received a $230,000 state grant to support housing stability and homelessness prevention. The City of Wichita Falls also planned to reallocate $94,490 in federal funds to help expand the organization’s women and children’s wing from 12 to 20 beds.

And Faith Mission is carrying out a $5.5 million expansion and renovation of Faith Mission and Faith Refuge to increase shelter capacity and improve services.

Housing stability takes a whole community. Safe shelter, practical hygiene support, and connections to care all matter, and we’re proud to be part of a community working together for our neighbors with compassion and dignity.

A little warmth can make a big difference. 💙 A warm home is part of health, safety, and dignity, and it complements the care we work to provide our neighbors across Texoma and Wichita Falls.

Texoma Council of Governments is collecting new or gently working space heaters through the end of October for a November giveaway at Sherman VFW Post 5336. If you’re able, please donate a heater before the month ends, and tag Texoma Council of Governments to help spread the word!

Thank you for showing up for our neighbors. We’re better together!

Let's clear up a few things people often get wrong about homelessness in Texoma. 💙

MYTH: "People experiencing homelessness just need to get a job."
FACT: Many of our neighbors DO work. In a DignitySOS survey, hard-working households told us they're one unexpected bill away from losing housing or running water. A job doesn't cover a deposit, a car repair, and a medical bill all in the same month.

MYTH: "If someone's homeless, they chose it."
FACT: Homelessness usually follows something nobody chooses: a job loss, an illness, a family crisis, a rent increase. It can happen faster than most people realize.

MYTH: "Hygiene isn't really a problem, shelters have showers."
FACT: Shower and laundry access is limited across the region, and our survey of Wichita County residents found 70.2% struggle to access laundry facilities. Clean clothes and a shower affect health, confidence, and the ability to show up for interviews and work.

MYTH: "Helping creates dependency."
FACT: Practical support, like a free shower, hygiene supplies, or a connection to medical care or housing assistance, helps people regain stability. DignitySOS pairs immediate care with connections to broader support services, because dignity and a path forward go together.

Stigma keeps neighbors from asking for help. Facts open doors.

Working hard doesn’t always mean making ends meet. That’s the reality for ALICE households: Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. In Wichita Falls, up to 14,000 households may fall into this bracket. Neighbors who could be one water bill away from losing running water at home.

And while SNAP and WIC help families afford food, they can’t be used to buy essentials like soap, shampoo, deodorant or laundry detergent.

DignitySOS is here for those neighbors, too. Our free mobile showers are open to anyone who needs them. No judgment. No questions asked. Just a safe, welcoming place to reset and restore, including for hard-workin’ folks who never thought they’d need this kind of help.

Needing help is human. Learn more or support our mission at dignitysos.org.
