A representative from Meritrust Credit Union visited students in the Panther Learning Center (PLC) this afternoon to share practical financial wellness tips, including how to budget and make smart financial decisions when purchasing a vehicle.

They first learned about budgeting, discussing how to budget using four simple steps: track your income, track your expenses, calculate your cash flow and change something.

Students compared the pros and cons of purchasing new and used vehicles, learning how buying used can help save money on the purchase price, insurance and monthly payments. They also explored smart car-shopping strategies, including understanding their budget and credit score, researching insurance costs and vehicle reliability and getting preapproved for financing through their credit union before making a purchase.

Afterward, students created their own “dough”-nuts with toppings, a fun play on words connecting the sweet treat to the financial “dough” they will learn to manage in the future.

🎓Senior Spotlight: Ava Rushlow 🎓

Meet Ava, a senior at Derby High School!

Ava is involved in photography, lifeguarding and HOSA-Future Health Professionals, where she has recently become more active and is preparing for an upcoming conference.

Ava started her own photography business this past summer. “I take pictures of seniors, families, solos, couples, things like that,” she said. “I enjoy taking photos; it’s one of my passions.”

Ava has lifeguarded since freshman year and plans to return next year as a head lifeguard. She is certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid and holds her Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) and Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certifications.

Ava will graduate from high school in December and earn her associates degree through Butler Community College in May. She plans to attend the University of Kansas to major in human anatomy, with the goal of becoming an anesthesiologist.

Ava encourages others to stay confident. “Don’t let others put you down. If you’re at your lowest point, there’s always the highest point that you can aspire to be in,” she shared.

Congratulations to DHS senior Aaliyah Beal! In addition to sophomores Addi Casey and Dean Marks shared earlier this week, Aaliyah also earned an Editor’s Choice Award for her contribution to the student publication, Voices of Kansas. Aaliyah earned the award in the Perspectives and Literary Criticism category with her essay “Artificial Intelligence: Adversary of Humanity.” The three will be recognized at the Kansas Association of Teachers of English (KATE) conference later this month.

This brings our total to three student winners, making us home to three out of only four students across the state who earned Editor's Choice Awards. Editor's Choice entries are featured with lesson plans aligned to Common Core Standards, allowing these student works to be used by English-Language Arts teachers across the state of Kansas.

We are of our Panthers!
