The last time our community voted on a school bond was 2008, 18 years ago.

Back then, Netflix came in the mail, the first iPhone was still brand new, "The Dark Knight" was in theaters, and 18-year-old Taylor Swift’s "Fearless" had just been released.

A lot has changed since 2008, including the needs of our schools and students.

Project-based learning helps students take an active role in their education through creativity, collaboration, and real-world problem-solving.

At Black Traditional Magnet Elementary USD 259, students put that approach into action with their first project of the school year: redefining Panda Pride. Every student and staff member had a voice in creating the school’s updated guidelines for success.

Their work came to life at the Panda Pride Assembly, where each grade proudly shared its work with the school community.

Teachers say project-based learning has students excited about learning, more involved in the process, and eager to learn from and collaborate with one another.

With nearly 300 students currently on the waiting list for Horace Mann Dual Language Magnet K-8 School, one of the bond projects will be renovating the former Hadley Middle School and relocating Horace Mann there. This move, which was suggested and endorsed by Horace Mann staff, will allow the program to expand its magnet theme while providing students with larger classrooms and improved athletic facilities. In this video, Horace Mann Principal Joel Escarpita talks about the challenges in the current building and how the move to Hadley will benefit students and staff.

Long before “content creator” was a career, Chris Jackson (Jackstacks.Eats) was a WPS student — attending Caldwell, Colvin, Curtis and Wichita Southeast High School — who loved basketball, people and trying something new.

Today, the Wichita content creator still returns to Wichita Public Schools to talk with students. And when he does, he sees a little of himself in the kids he meets.

In his My WPS Story, Chris looks back at the experiences that shaped him, the creative path he never could have planned for, and why students don't have to have it all figured out yet.
