As Childhood Cancer Awareness Month comes to a close, PCHD is taking a moment to recognize the children and families whose lives have been affected by childhood cancer. 💛

We honor the courage of young patients, the strength of their families and caregivers and the memories of children whose lives ended too soon.

Awareness matters today, this month and throughout the year. 💛

You may have seen recent news about changes to federal childhood vaccine recommendations. If you have questions about what these changes mean for your child, here are a few important things to keep in mind:

🔹 The following routine childhood vaccines continue to be recommended. They include:
✅ MMR – Protection against measles, mumps & rubella
✅ DTaP/Tdap – Protection against diphtheria, tetanus & pertussis (whooping cough)
✅ Polio
✅ Hib – Protection against meningitis, epiglottitis, pneumonia & other bloodstream and joint infections
✅ Pneumococcal - Protection against pneumonia, bacterial meningitis & other blood infections
✅ HPV (Human Papillomavirus) - Protection against multiple types of cancer
✅ Varicella - Protection against chickenpox

🔹 West Virginia’s school vaccine requirements still apply. The executive order does not supersede state laws regarding vaccination requirements for school attendance.

🔹 Talk with your child’s healthcare provider. The executive order encourages shared decision-making between parents and healthcare providers. Your child’s healthcare provider can help you understand current recommendations and determine which vaccines are appropriate based on your child’s individual health history.

If you have questions or need to get your child up to date on vaccinations, call the Putnam County Health Department at 304-757-2541 to schedule a visit. We are here to help families navigate childhood vaccination needs.
