👻 Ghosts of Downtown York: The Haunting of the Rose Hotel 🥀

On Congress Street in Downtown York stands a building with more than 170 years of history and a few ghost stories to go along with it.

Built in 1852, the Rose Hotel sits across from the York County Courthouse. Once a gathering place for travelers and visitors to York, the historic building has witnessed generations of change, including one of the most turbulent periods in American history.

But could some of its former visitors still be lingering?

According to an article titled “Halloween Legends,” written by Jennifer Becknell for The York and Clover Enquirer-Herald, historian and former York Mayor Eddie Lee shared some of the ghostly legends surrounding the Rose Hotel.

During Reconstruction, Union soldiers reportedly stayed at the hotel. Some believe the building's haunted reputation is connected to its Civil War history.

Over the years, stories have circulated about mysterious figures wandering the hallways. Some are described as Confederate soldiers still wearing their uniforms, while others appear as women dressed in mourning clothes, believed to be widows grieving those lost during the war.

Are these simply stories passed down through generations, or could echoes of the past still linger within those walls?

And the Rose Hotel isn't the only place along this stretch of Congress Street with a haunting history.

Across from the courthouse, near the hotel, public hangings were once conducted beneath a tree. According to Lee, prisoners sentenced to death were taken across the street from the courthouse to meet their fate.

One can only imagine the stories this corner of Downtown York could tell.

Today, the Rose Hotel still stands, having traded its days as a bustling hotel for a quieter life as apartments. While its purpose has changed, its history remains very much a part of Downtown York.

The next time you're strolling along Congress Street near the courthouse, take a moment to look at the old hotel.

You never know who might be looking back. 👻

Have you heard any ghost stories about the Rose Hotel or the courthouse? Perhaps you have a story of your own. We'd love to hear it!
