It’s my favorite time of year! Our foxes are getting their winter coats back in! And although in North Florida we don’t get snow, at least the foxes will get to enjoy some cooler weather
I know that myself and our volunteers also are looking forward to it 🥵

Look at Whisper’s beautiful corkscrew tail! 🦊🤍 It’s one of the things that makes her stand out, but behind that unusual appearance is a story worth sharing.

Whisper comes from fur-farm breeding, where generations of foxes were selectively bred for the colors, patterns, and thick coats that would make their fur more valuable. Those breeding choices were made for the fur industry, not to prepare these foxes for life in the wild.

Curled tails and other physical differences have been documented in captive-bred foxes. We can’t know the exact cause of Whisper’s tail shape just by looking at her, but selective breeding and limited breeding pools can allow inherited health problems to be passed down. An unusual appearance doesn’t tell us everything about a fox’s health, and some consequences of breeding aren’t visible at all.

People sometimes ask why we don’t release foxes like Whisper. Being a fox doesn’t automatically mean being prepared to survive in the wild. Our captive-raised residents depend on us for food, shelter, and veterinary care. Releasing them would put them at risk.

There’s also the wildlife to consider. Fur-farm foxes can breed with wild red foxes, introducing captive bloodlines into native populations. Responsible sanctuary care means protecting both our residents and the wild foxes outside our fences.

Whisper never had a choice in how she was bred or where her life began. Here, she gets to be valued for who she is, with a full belly, a safe home, and that unforgettable little tail. 🤍🐾

A huge thank-you to Dreamer’s sponsor, Emmie Dimayuga-Corso, for purchasing a new heated house to help keep our desert foxes cozy this winter! 🏡❤️

🦊 Five large houses to replace older houses for our red foxes.
🔥 Two more heated houses for our desert foxes, who need extra warmth when temperatures drop.

All of these items can be found at the very bottom of our wishlist, linked below!

🦊🔥 Help us keep our desert foxes warm this winter!

Over the next week, we’ll be getting our fennec and bat-eared foxes ready for chilly North Florida nights, and we’re adding heaters and heated houses to our wishlist! 🏡🤎

Having access to warm, protected shelter is especially important for these little ones as temperatures drop. Heated houses give them a cozy place to retreat, and heaters help us provide the warmth they need during cold weather.

These are practical gifts that will make a difference all winter long. If you’d like to help us get their spaces ready, please take a look at our wishlist below. 🎁🐾

Every purchase and every share helps us care for our big-eared crew. Thank you for supporting Salty Fox Sanctuary! 🧡

Hey guys! 🦊🏡 We still need 6 more fox houses like this one!

Thanks to our wonderful sponsors, 3 have already been purchased for us this week! ❤️

Instead of patching up the wooden houses again before winter, we’d love to replace them with these. The foxes love them, they’re durable, and the lid opens for easy cleaning! 🙌

They’re around $170 each, and I’ll put the link in the comments. If you’d like to purchase one, please message us for our mailing address. 💌

If you’d rather contribute toward a house, any amount helps! I’ll link our donation options below!

Thank you for helping us keep our foxes cozy this winter! Please share! 🦊❤️

🦊🏡 SHE’S HERE!! OUR NEW FOX STORM SHELTER HAS ARRIVED! 🏡🦊

We are SO excited to announce the delivery of our brand-new 12x30 storm shelter! She’s here, she’s perfect, and we can’t wait to get her finished and ready for our foxes!

This shelter is going to make an incredible difference for our sanctuary. It will provide a safe, protected space for all 25 of our foxes during hurricanes, intense heat, heavy rain, and other severe weather. Living in North Florida, we know firsthand how unpredictable hurricane season can be, and having a secure place for every single one of our foxes is an absolute necessity. 🌀🌧️

But this building will be so much more than a storm shelter! It will also serve as our medical and treatment facility when our in-house veterinarian comes to care for our animals. We’ll have dedicated storage for all 25 of our crates, our food supplies (including raw meat and dry kibble), supplements, medical necessities, and all the other things that go into caring for our foxes. 🩺🦊

We’ve already purchased the laminate flooring, mini-split AC system, and generator. Later this week, spray foam insulation will be installed, followed by plastic sheet walls to finish the interior. We also had custom shelving built to fit our crates perfectly, allowing us to stack all 25 along the top and maximize our space. A refrigerator, deep freezer, veterinary table, and additional storage shelving will complete the setup! 🙌🏼

This entire project was made possible through a grant from the SPCA International and we truly cannot express how grateful we are. ❤️ Their support is helping us provide a safer, more functional environment for the animals who depend on us every single day.

This has been such an important need for our sanctuary, and seeing it finally arrive is an amazing feeling!

🎥 I’ll be sharing a video tour later today so you can see the space and everything we have planned!

Thank you to everyone who continues to support our sanctuary and help us make things like this possible. Every improvement we make is another step toward giving our foxes the safest, healthiest, and happiest lives we can. 🧡🦊🏡

🦇 Miso & Mochi 🦊

Sundays are deep-cleaning days here at Salty Fox Sanctuary!

While all of our enclosures are cleaned every other day, Sundays are when everyone gets a thorough deep clean! For our bat-eared foxes, we also like to rearrange their furniture and switch things up a little. A change of scenery is a simple way to provide enrichment and encourage their natural curiosity.

We’re also getting ready to build some new enrichment platforms in their enclosure, similar to the ones we’ve been working on for our red foxes!

Mochi was especially entertaining today. She was absolutely obsessed with Ripley and wanted to play with him SO badly! 😂

🦊 Did you know? Bat-eared foxes are one of the few canid species that primarily eat insects! In the wild, termites make up a large portion of their diet, and those enormous ears aren’t just adorable. They have incredible hearing that helps them locate insects moving underground!

These two have such fun little personalities, and we love sharing a glimpse into their everyday lives with you!

🦊A Little Help for Our Foxes!

Hey everyone! We are in the process of replacing the houses and beds for our red foxes here at Salty Fox Sanctuary!

Many of our wooden houses are reaching the point of needing replacement, and we’ve found a wonderful alternative that our foxes absolutely LOVE! They’re durable, easy to clean, and will last for years to come.

I’ll be reaching out to sponsors individually if their fox needs a new house, giving them the opportunity to purchase one directly. If you’re not a sponsor but would still love to help, each house costs around $170, and if you purchase one, we’ll purchase a brand-new cooling bed to go inside! I promise these little upgrades make a world of difference in their comfort, especially with cooler nights approaching.

Right now, so much of our time and resources are going toward completing our new hurricane shelter. We’re doing our very best to prepare for the next storm while continuing to improve the everyday lives of our residents.

These foxes have already been through so much, and giving them a safe, cozy place to call their own means everything.

Whether you purchase a house, contribute a little toward one, or simply share this post, you’re helping make life a little better for a rescued fur farm fox.

Thank you for always loving our foxes as much as we do! 🦊💕
