A 2026 PBS News/NPR/Marist poll found that 58% of Americans believe that people will be told they’re not eligible to cast a ballot when they turn up to vote at their voting center.

UC San Diego surveyed this statement nationwide: “I worry that going to the polls could put me at risk of being questioned by federal immigration officers, despite being a U.S. citizen.” 31% of Asian-American & Hispanic respondents, 21% of Black respondents, and 8% of white respondents agreed.

These concerns make many people feel uneasy about voting in person this year even when they want to exercise this crucial right. The first step in working thru election fears is to physically bring down our stress levels. Breathing exercises are a great way to calm our nervous systems. Voters can use this strategy to help overcome apprehensions and not let fear win.

The Dept. of War used an emergency order to suddenly alter the form American citizens use to vote from abroad, bypassing public comment. The Pentagon made last-minute changes to forms that many overseas U.S. citizens use for absentee voting, removing a category of citizens that Republicans have been pushing to block from voting.

Overseas and Military Voting Forms Changed. But the Law Did Not.

Overseas and military voters should not let the changed federal voting forms stop them from voting. The forms were modified by the Pentagon under “emergency” authority, without the public review these forms have always gone through. But the law did not change. 
 
Although the new federal form no longer has the classification for U.S. citizens born abroad who have never lived in the U.S., 37 states and D.C. do allow these citizens to vote. Voters can continue to use the previous form versions.

We’re asking for changes to be reverted and for a normal public review. In the meantime, we’re here to help: the previous form version and complete voting information are available at usvotefoundation.org
