Abraham Lincoln-Martyr

VOA Learning English presents America’s Presidents.

Today we are talking about Abraham Lincoln.

He was the 16th president of the United States. Many Americans consider him one of country’s greatest leaders.

Yet people alive when Lincoln was elected in 1860 would probably be surprised by modern-day opinions about him. He had little formal education or government experience.

During the presidential campaign, critics made fun of his appearance and his simple way of talking. They warned that he was not very intelligent and would harm the nation’s image.

Some of his opponents – especially in Southern states – had even bigger concerns. They were afraid Lincoln would use the power of the federal government to end slavery in their states.

They were right.

Early life

Abraham Lincoln was born in the frontier state of Kentucky. His family was very poor and had a simple home: a log cabin.

Lincoln had to support his parents and his sister by working, so he rarely went to school. Instead, he taught himself by reading books.

Eventually, he became a lawyer in the state of Illinois.

As a young man, Lincoln was known for several qualities. He was tall and thin. He was very strong – his neighbors remembered him cutting down trees. And he was honest. The people he defended in court called him “Honest Abe.”

In time, Lincoln was elected to the Illinois General Assembly, the state’s legislature. He also served one term as a congressman in the U.S. House of Representatives.

But he was not popular there. Voters did not like his opposition to the country’s war with Mexico.

So Lincoln withdrew from politics and turned his attention to his family. He had married a Southern belle named Mary Todd in 1842. They had four sons. But two died when they were very young.

Lincoln also developed his legal career representing railroad companies. Some people thought he might become the best railroad lawyer in the country. But that is not what happened.

Election of 1860

In the 1850s, Lincoln returned to national politics. The division over the issue of slavery was deepening. Lincoln was not an anti-slavery activist, an abolitionist. But he did not support the country’s policies on slavery.

Lincoln believed slavery violated the American Declaration of Independence, which said all men had the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

To be clear, Lincoln did not believe that black people should have the same rights as white U.S. citizens. But he did not agree that one person should own other people, or profit from their work while they earned nothing and were held captive.

Lincoln decided to compete in elections for a seat in the U.S. Senate. He was chosen as the candidate of a new, anti-slavery party. Members called themselves Republicans.

During the election campaign, Lincoln famously discussed the issue of slavery in a series of debates with Stephen Douglas, the Democratic Party’s candidate.

Lincoln’s words moved some voters. But they did not earn him enough votes to get elected.

So, while Douglas took the seat in the Senate, Lincoln prepared to run for president. Lincoln said that, if he were elected, he would not expand slavery to new territories in the country’s west. But he promised not to interfere with slavery in the Southern states, where it already existed.

Voters in Southern, slave-holding states did not trust Lincoln. Not a single Southern state supported him in the election of 1860.

But he won anyway. The support of anti-slavery Northerners gave him the presidency.

In answer, seven Southern states withdrew from the Union. Four more later joined them. These states formed a new government, called the Confederate States of America – or, the Confederacy.

*Confederate officials chose their own president and wrote their own constitution, which permitted each state control over its own laws – especially laws that protected slavery. Confederate officials said they no longer recognized the power of the U.S. federal government, or its chief executive.

As that chief executive, Lincoln would have to decide what to do.

Civil War

President Lincoln’s first test came a little more than a month after he was sworn-in.

The event involved Fort Sumter, a federal military base on an island off the coast of South Carolina. Soldiers on the base needed food. Lincoln said he would send some by ship.

But Confederate officials considered the fort part of South Carolina, which belonged to the Confederacy. They demanded that the Union soldiers leave the fort.

But Union forces and the U.S. president ignored the Confederates’ demands.

As promised, Lincoln sent the supply ships. As expected, Confederate soldiers attacked. A day and a half later, the fort’s Union soldiers surrendered.

*The clash did not last long, and no one was killed in the fighting. But the battle at Fort Sumter marked the official beginning of hostilities between the Union and the Confederacy.

Lincoln immediately took action to answer the loss of Fort Sumter. He called on state militias for troops and asked for a special meeting of Congress.

The president was careful not to ask Congress to make an official declaration of war, in part because he did not want to recognize the Confederacy as a separate nation. Instead, he called the Southern states’ opposition a rebellion.

However, the conflict between the Southern Confederacy and the Northern Union was a civil war.

Neither side expected the fighting to last very long – a few weeks or maybe months. Instead, the Civil War lasted four and a half years.

Most of the major battles took place near Washington, DC, in the states of Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania. Soldiers and civilians also clashed in the west, in Tennessee, as well as in the southern states of Mississippi, South Carolina, and Georgia.

But the war involved the entire country. At least 4 million men fought in it. Among the soldiers were African-American and Native-American men.

*The conflict divided families. Brothers, fathers and sons fought against each other.

Women in both the North and South also supported the war effort. They cooked meals, made and repaired clothing for the troops, served as nurses and cared for the soldiers. Both white and African-American women also took over the work of men who had left to fight.

And more than 620,000 men died -- recent scholarship says as many as 750,000. The Civil War remains the bloodiest war in American history.

And it changed the country. The war radically affected American politics, economics, and society.

Abraham Lincoln was the U.S. president through all of it.

Next week's article will discuss Lincoln’s presidency and legacy.

*Deleted Photos May Still Be On Your Phone*

When you remove a photo from your cell phone, it may not be gone for good. That is great news if you accidentally delete an important photo. But it could be a big problem if a photo you wanted to delete is still on your phone.

You may think when you tap the trash can icon to delete a photo, that photo is no longer on your phone. But that may not be true. The photo may stay on your phone for a while to give you a chance to restore it.

So, it is important for you to know what happens to a photo when you send it to the trash.

iPhone and iPad photos app

When you tap the trash can icon on iPhone or iPad, you will see a confirmation. It asks if you want to delete or cancel. When you choose delete a notice tells you the photo will be deleted from all of your devices.

Your photo will disappear from view then and there. But it is not truly gone.

Instead, the image is sent to the Recently Deleted album in the Photos app where it remains for 30 days. During that time you can return a photo from the Recently Deleted album to your phone. You can also choose to delete it permanently.

To find the Recently Deleted album, open the Photos app, then tap Albums in the bottom menu. Swipe to find the Recently Deleted album.

Tap on the Recently Deleted album to find the photos you have deleted within the past 30 days. On each photo will be a number representing the days left until the photo is deleted permanently.

If you decide you want to keep a photo or delete it at that moment, tap Select in the upper right corner of the screen. Then tap the photo you want to keep or delete so a check mark appears.

Tap Delete or Recover at the bottom of the screen to delete the photo or add it back into the app.

If you choose to delete a photo from the Recently Deleted album, you will be asked to confirm your choice. You will also be warned: "This photo will be deleted. This action cannot be undone."

Google Photos

Google Photos keeps deleted photos for 60 days before they are permanently removed from your account. You can restore deleted photos within that time. You can also permanently delete photos if you do not want to wait 60 days for them to disappear.

To find photos you have deleted, open the Google Photos app and tap the menu icon in the upper left corner of the screen. The menu will appear.

Tap Trash to see the photos you have deleted from Google Photos within the past 60 days.

Tap the three dots in the upper right corner of the Trash page. You will be given the option of Empty Trash, that will permanently delete photos in Trash from Google Photos. You also have the option to choose photos.

Choose photos you want to either delete or restore. Then tap the trash can or the circle arrow in the upper right corner of the screen to delete or restore the chosen photos.

If you choose to delete the photos, you will be asked to confirm. You will also get the message, "Deleting items from the trash is permanent."

Deleting photos from other photo services

If you use a different app for storing and sharing your photos, check to see whether deleted photos are truly deleted. This information can come in handy whether you accidentally delete a photo or want a photo to disappear.

Either do an Internet search or look within the app to see what happens to deleted photos for the photo service you use.

Is coconut good for you?

From VOA Learning English, this is the Health & Lifestyle report.

Americans love food trends. Much like clothing, some foods are more popular at times than others. The United States is currently experiencing a coconut craze.

Janette Rizk is a spokesperson for a popular store called Whole Foods Market in the United States. It has sold coconut water and coconut oil for years. But, Rizk says she has seen an increase in other coconut products in the stores she represents.

"We're seeing coconut oil in natural beauty products. We're also seeing things like the meat of the product being used in everything from flours, to tortilla chips, to milks and butters."

Some health experts say coconut can help fight infection in the body and raise its levels of good cholesterol.

Elissa Goodman is a holistic nutritionist. She says coconut has many health benefits.

"It revs up your metabolism. It also acts as an anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal. So, it's great for the immune system. It's great for the heart. It raises your HDL (High-density lipoprotein) and it also is great for like any kind of urinary tract infections, any kidney issues, weight. I mean, the possibilities of using coconut oil for your health (are) endless."

HDL is what doctors call “good cholesterol.” Low-density lipoprotein, or LDL, is bad.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the U.S. provides information about cholesterol on its website. It says most of the body’s cholesterol is LDL. High levels of LDL cholesterol can block arteries, the tubes that carry blood from the heart to the rest of the body. The blockages can lead to heart disease and stroke.

The CDC website says HDL cholesterol helps remove LDL cholesterol from the body. High levels of HDL cholesterol can reduce the risk for heart disease and stroke.

Walter Willett is a doctor and nutrition expert at Harvard University’s School of Public Health.

Willett says there isn’t yet enough research about how coconut oil affects the body to claim it is healthful. However, scientists and nutritionists do know the makeup of coconut.

Unlike other plant-based oils, coconut oil is a saturated fat. Willett explains that “coconut oil is about 90 percent saturated fat, which is a higher percentage than butter” which has about 64 percent.

Saturated fats are in animal fats, such as butter, meat, egg yolks, and in some plants like coconut and palm oils. In humans, saturated fat often increases cholesterol levels in the blood.

Unsaturated fats often come from plants. Eating foods high in unsaturated fats can reduce the amount of cholesterol in the blood.

Willett says that “too much saturated fat in the diet is unhealthy because it raises LDL cholesterol levels, which increases the risk of heart disease. But coconut oil also increases HDL cholesterol – the good cholesterol.

So, Dr. Willett says it is “less bad” than saturated fats that do not raise HDL levels.

Coconut oil might not be the new super health food that some claim. But moderate use in cooking could be a good for some people.

An important note when buying coconut oil: Look for “virgin” on the label. Make sure it is not hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated.

Hydrogenation is a chemical reaction that turns unsaturated fats into saturated ones. Hydrogenated fats are also called trans fats. The CDC says trans fats raise your bad cholesterol and may even lower good cholesterol.

And that's the Health & Lifestyle report.
