The rehabilitation of Feiawa Park and the seafront is about more than maintenance and beautification. It forms part of a wider effort to better connect the city centre, linking the waterfront with key public spaces and supporting the long-term revitalisation of Port Vila's Central Business District (CBD).
Supported by New Zealand High Commission in Vanuatu, the project builds on previous investments in the waterfront and public spaces. The current works focus on restoring facilities, addressing maintenance issues, and improving public infrastructure and amenities.
What's included in the rehabilitation works?
โ
New natangura roofing for the Haos blong Handikraft
โ
Repairs to damaged structures
โ
Refurbishment of public tables and benches
โ
Repainting of car park areas and facilities
โ
Replacement of crushed coral in landscaped areas
โ
New sand for the children's playground
โ
General maintenance and beautification throughout Feiawa Park and the seafront
โ
Improvements to safety, accessibility and public use areas
Works are expected to be completed in July 2026.
Recently, representatives from Port Vila City Council and the Department of Urban Affairs and Planning Project Management Unit visited the site, where they were guided by the Project Manager and staff from Fletcher Organization (Vanuatu) Limited, which has been engaged to deliver the rehabilitation works.
The project supports the Port Vila CBD Vision and Concept Plan's precinct approach, which aims to better connect different parts of the city centre. Under the Plan, the Seafront and Fatumaru Bay area is identified as a key waterfront precinct supporting tourism, recreation, business activity and community use.
As one of Port Vila's most frequently used public spaces, the waterfront plays an important role in connecting businesses, community facilities, visitor attractions and public spaces.
These upgrades will improve safety, access and connectivity across the city centre, supporting stronger links between the waterfront and future public spaces.

What if the Port Vila Market Precinct could become safer, more accessible, and better connected to the CBD?
As part of the wider Port Vila CBD rebuild, UN Women Pacific is partnering with Port Vila City Council to undertake a gender-responsive safety and access audit of the Port Vila Central Market and surrounding Market Precinct.
Identified in the Port Vila CBD Vision and Concept Plan as a key economic and community hub, the Market Precinct connects vendors, businesses, public transport, the waterfront, and thousands of residents and visitors every week.
The audit will help identify practical improvements to safety and accessibility, ensuring future redevelopment meets the needs of women, girls, vendors, and the wider community.
This work forms part of wider planning for the redevelopment of the Market Precinct.

As part of Governmentโs continued focus on the Port Vila CBD rebuild, the DUAP PMU was pleased to have urban design specialist Paul Walter in-country for the week to work closely with Government, the Port Vila City Council (PVCC), and private sector developers to progress CBD earthquake rebuild, and revitalisation initiatives.
A key focus of the visit was discussions with the Vanuatu National Provident Fund (VNPF) on opportunities for coordinated, long-term redevelopment in the CBD. Meetings were also held with Chantillyโs Management and Au Bon Marchรฉ, together with PVCC and DUAP staff, to discuss planning issues across the CBD, including foreshore considerations.
The visit also comes as redevelopment is starting to become visible, particularly with the commencement of New Zealand-funded rehabilitation works at the Port Vila Seafront and Feiawa Park. There are also ongoing development applications from private sector businesses indicating renewed commercial rebuilding activity. This visit forms part of ongoing technical discussions and planning with businesses, leaseholders, donors, and government agencies.
These activities support the coordinated, precinct-based approach outlined in the Port Vila CBD Concept Plan and reinforce Governmentโs commitment to enabling both public and private sector-led development in advancing the CBD rebuild, with all major CBD infrastructure targeted for completion by 2030.
