Newington is a fantastic ward with lots of great initiatives. I had the pleasure of visiting the Fielding street allotment last week. Jane spoke eloquently about the history of the allotment and value the space gives to the community. There are currently 16 spaces all in use. The waiting list is evidence that our communities value allotment spaces.

The allotment was established in 1970 and the oldest person to use the space is over 90. In addition the allotment partners with Walworth Gardens delivering community projects to adults experiencing mental health.

I'm looking forward to going back to Fielding street allotment in the summer. Please email me on [email protected] if you would to join the visit.

The former Manor Place swimming baths have been turned into an incredible space with an indoor football cage and skatepark which is completely free for local people to use.

It opened in November and is made by Palace Skateboards and Nike. It was great to have a look inside yesterday.

More details on the space and how to book it can be found here: https://manorplace.com/

Out last night speaking to people in Sutherland Square about what Southwark Labour Party have delivered locally including this electric vehicle charging point which we funded as ward councillors - one of around 100 in Newington and more than 1800 across the councils charging network.

Increasing the number of charging points for electric vehicles is just one of the initiatives which led to Southwark being independently ranked as the third best council in the country for climate action that makes our air cleaner and lives healthier.

We have been advised by TfL that there will be some closures on the Northern line from Monday 12th January until late spring 2026 impacting journeys from Kennington.

The Bank branch will be closed between Camden Town and Kennington from around 10pm until close of traffic on Monday - Thursday to allow essential track replacement work takes place. The normal timetable will continue to operate from Friday - Sunday.

There will be four additional trains per hour on the Charing Cross branch (Camden Town to Kennington) to mitigate the impact of these closures. Everyone is encouraged to check the TfL Journey Planner or the TfL Go app before travelling.

The Remembrance Sunday march from the Royal British Legion on Braganza Street and service at Kennington Park is always special. This morning we were proud to lay a wreath on behalf of Southwark Labour Party and remember all those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country. We will remember them.

We're working hard to be a good landlord, and that's why we've built or started construction on over 3,000 new council homes across Southwark.

We can also now announce that we are moving forward with our next phase of council and affordable home building. Our proposals, with selected partners Wates Residential and Mount Anvil, are expected to deliver more than 250 council homes for people on our housing waiting list, alongside three much-awaited community centres, other affordable homes and market sale homes.

Cllr Helen Dennis, Southwark Council’s Cabinet Member for New Homes and Sustainable Development, said: “Council homes transform lives and in Southwark we’ve built more new council homes than anywhere else, with 3,000 completed or under construction on site.

“We’re determined to keep building more new council homes despite the current challenges including high build cost, interest rates, and delays with the new Building Safety Regulator (BSR) which are making it very difficult to build homes, especially in London.

“After a rigorous procurement process we’ve awarded ‘preferred bidder’ status to two developers – Wates Residential and Mount Anvil - with a good reputation for working with local people and delivering community benefit.

“These agreements, once finalised, will deliver much-needed new council homes for local people, as well as replacement community centres.

“We will continue to do all we can to maximise the delivery of affordable housing, especially council housing, through these partnerships, to achieve the best outcome possible for local people.”

We’re updating our Licensing Policy, and we want your feedback.

Our Licensing Policy sets out the principles the council follows when deciding whether to grant licenses: these could be for venues that sell alcohol, provide entertainment or offer late-night refreshment. The policy aims to balance support for our local businesses with issues like public safety and nuisance to residents. Take a look at the draft policy and submit your feedback before 31 October - link is in the comments below.
