FROM STUDENT WORKER TO FUTURE AGRICULTURIST: JOHN LEVIE ASUNCION’S JOURNEY OF PERSEVERANCE
NAGTIPUNAN, QUIRINO — For 22-year-old John Levie B. Asuncion, pursuing his education meant more than attending classes. It meant persevering through financial challenges while holding firmly to his dream of building a better future through agriculture.
A graduate of Nagtipunan National High School in S.Y. 2022–2023 and a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture student, John Levie became a beneficiary of the Special Program for Employment of Students (SPES) twice—first as a high school student in 2022 and again as a second-year college student in 2024.
John Levie learned about SPES through the Local Government Unit–Public Employment Service Office (LGU-PESO) Nagtipunan and his school. Through the assistance and guidance of the Local Government of Nagtipunan through its Municipal PESO, he was given an opportunity to work during his school break while earning income to help support his education.
Coming from a farming family, John Levie knew the challenges of making ends meet. His father was the family's main source of income, with farming as their primary livelihood. However, the rising cost of agricultural inputs often made it difficult for their income to cover the family's daily needs and his educational expenses. At that time, John Levie was the only sibling who was still pursuing his studies.
Through SPES, facilitated with the support of LGU-PESO Nagtipunan, John Levie was able to contribute to his own educational expenses. His earnings helped cover transportation, food, school projects, materials, and other school-related needs, while also helping lessen the financial burden on his parents.
In 2024, he was assigned to the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO), where his tasks complemented his Agriculture studies. He assisted in seedling production and care, tree planting and maintenance, landscaping, area maintenance, and other environmental activities.
The experience allowed John Levie to apply what he learned in the classroom while developing a deeper appreciation for agriculture and environmental management.
More than financial assistance, SPES taught him valuable lessons in responsibility, discipline, perseverance, hard work, and time management. It also showed him the value of earning through honest work while pursuing his education.
His dedication was further recognized when he became a finalist in the Gintong Pamana Program for Most Outstanding SPES Recipient, an achievement that inspired him to work even harder toward his dreams.
For John Levie, SPES was more than a temporary employment opportunity. With the support of DOLE, LGU-PESO Nagtipunan, his school, and his family, it became part of his journey toward independence, personal growth, and a brighter future.
From a student seeking a way to help finance his education to an aspiring agriculturist gaining valuable hands-on experience, John Levie continues to cultivate his dreams with determination.
With education as his foundation, hard work as his strength, and the support of SPES and LGU-PESO Nagtipunan, John Levie is steadily cultivating not only the land, but also a future built on perseverance, responsibility, and hope.
