COSAS GAUTENG 18TH PEC
04 JANUARY 2020
IMMEDIATE RELEASE!!

The Congress of South African Students in Gauteng Province wishes to extend compliments of the new year, which marks the centenary(100 years) of the Great Lion of Midlands the late Cde Harry Gwala.

It is with great dismay in the early days of the new decade to note such disgusting community behavior in the Vaal (Evaton) of always resorting to taking out frustrations by burning our institutions of learning, our schools are abused by this thuggery. It is the selfishness of our communities that always destroys the future of this nation and we demand that it stops.

As the 18th Provincial Executive Committee Of COSAS in Gauteng bodly condemn and advice all communities across the Province not to temper with our environment of learning especially for their selfish battles, not in a million years.

We also call upon all members of the Organization to respectful conduct themselves and get prepared for the work of the Organization as we have concluded enjoying our festive season responsible we expect everyone to be ready and fit enough for Back2School Campaigns Jointly with learn without fear Operations especially Sub-branches and Branches.

We further would like to congratulate every learner that has made it to the next grade,we are saying to them and those that did not make it that they should not give up, continue working hard and tbat they should pull up their socks. With that also wishing all 2019 Matric learner Good luck upon the release of their final results. To schools that are still holding our 2019 reports cards, we are saying that they should release them to their owners or we will quickly intervene and it won't be nice, we also wish to stimulate the spirit of cooperation with all stakeholders in our schools as the year begins.

However we remain confident and impressed by leadership qualities that are daily displayed by Cde Panyaza Lesufi the MEC of Education and Youth Development who's currently assuming the highest Office in the Province (Acting Premier), indeed we are proud to have products of the Organization displaying our colors and values at the level best.

The Provincial Executive Committee Of COSAS Gauteng remains extremely concerned about the method of distributing matric results which has been risky, reckless and profitable in the previous years, and we are very much aware that previous generations before us have tried many amicable attempts to bring about methods that are mostly preferred by students not their bias system hence they were dismally suppressed.

The Department of Basic Education has shown no efforts in trying to transform the Basic Educational system since the beginning of the democratic South Africa but continously degenerate but being given practical examples and advices by the Principal of Principals Cde Panyaza Lesufi, hence we applaud him as the National MEC without fear of contradiction.

We therefore edge with the Department of Basic Education to stop publishing our matric results, to ensure that there is one educational system by making sure that all private schools are nationalize, the inequality in the education system continues to render us useless and it is unacceptable. The Gauteng Department of Education must set an example by banning the Publication of matric results in our Province.

The Department of Basic Education has to do away with the tendency of literally folding hands and enjoying lemon tea's in their air-con offices whilst a black child is suffering by weather changes in a Mobile class, whilst a black child is in shortage of learning material, whilst a black child is in shortage of full school uniform but the ANC government choose to give it all away to Prisoners, that has to come to an end.

The Provincial Executive Committee finds a necessity to publicly condemn the group of disgruntled fellows, who are trying to circummsize the unity and dignity of GAUTENG and cause deliberate confusion promoting parallel structures within the Province.

This is a clear symbol of how much the organization needs to start being more vigilant when producing and polishing leaders to avoid organizational faults in the expense of it's constituency more especially when we are approaching 2021 local elections. We call for one National student council that will correct all the mistakes that were made in September 2019.

Furthermore we edge with the Educational alliance structure in our terrain which is labeled as SADTU, to respectively engage with thier members within the Province not intimidated nor discampaign our members in our annual RCL elections as we uphold the political mandate of One_Chairperson/One_RCL_President, rather pledge cooperative support.

We are also looking forward a helping hand from our student alliance in the Province known as SASCO in assisting our members to be absorbed by the system of higher learning where difficulties may occur.

We are also committed into the verification of activism of all our members in the process of ANCYL membership submissions, starting from all PEC members which are expected to bring their paid membership forms as a proof of activism as obligated by the constitution.

28/11/2019

The Congress Of South African Students convened a Provincial Executive Committee meeting on the 26th November 2019 Sisulu House in Johannesburg, which marks the first Provincial Executive Committee meeting after the seating of the 19th National Congress.

The meeting commenced by decisively paying maximum attention to the current dynamics prevailing within the country that seeks to delay the progress of the organization in particular within our Province, as discussing the Political Overview delivered by the Provincial Chairperson being informed by the nonstop bleeding of the organization. Which further emphasised on redoubling efforts of brainstorming political ideas that can be an amicable solution to this unbecoming situation, however the PEC was decisive enough to reach a common solution to adhere with previous decisions to advice the National Executive Committee to decisively take legal action and further expel all those that are bringing the organization into disrupt by parallelism.

The Provincial Executive Committee strongly focused on how to pave the political terrain and save the organization. With a common interest of eradicating unnecessary confusion caused by John and his temporary friends, which have went to an extent to release a misleading statements claiming the disbandment of the 18th Provincial Executive Committee. We are confident enough to give a correct public clarification that the Provincial Executive Committee is still led by Cde Masithembe Maqwara as the Provincial Chairperson and Cde Dineo Rooi as the Acting Provincial Secretary without any fear of contradiction but confidence given by the 18th Provincial Congress, one of the most united Congress in the Organization.

The PEC has a serious concern about the visibility and attendance of deployees according to their respective deployments and lack of quarterly reports to the PSO.
Which positively resulted into the PEC resolving to a well consolidated Visibility campaign, this will start with Regional Students Assemblies to evaluate the activism of Regions, its respective Branches to ensure that there are good structures. This was part of the consistent discussions and resolutions of the PEC following the Organizational overview as delivered by the Acting Provincial Secretary informed by the state of regions. The PEC further resolved on co-opting Cde Onkgopotse Makele the former Regional Secretary of Ekurhuleni into the PEC.

On Westrand Region, the PEC strongly condemned certain individuals claiming to lead the Region, this is as the PWC is still responsible of organizing a United Regional Congress and delivered a report which has rest assure the PEC that before the commencement of back to school campaigns it would have officiated one of the few congresses in the Region. On the Ekurhuleni report of the Bilateral meeting of COSAS and YL RTT, the PEC advice the REC as recognized by the 18th PEC to urgently convene a meeting verifying the confidence of the REC without fear or favour of anyone and continuously endorse the REC led by Cde Melusi Nkosi as Regional Chairperon and Cde Mxolisi Buthelezi as the Regional Secretary.

The PEC also subjected Cde Thabo Tau into a DC hearing, this was as a result of the subject failing to come before the PEC and account, further give a detailed report of what transpired in Ekurhuleni Region where he has placed the name of the organization into disrepute and misrepresented our morality as the PEC.
With full understanding about the state of the organization, the PEC had to give reminding remarks to specific Regions that they are all due to Congresses namely Greater Johannesburg, Tshwane and Sedibeng Region must convene before Provincial Back to School Campaigns.

On Education, a report was presented from the Office of the Chairperson following letters of complaint and grievences that were channelled to the Gauteng Department of Education, as we have managed to achieve the scrapping off of a modulation method permanently in our system as of 2020.

The MEC has also agreed to restructure the method of RCL elections which was found bias to teachers who are against the existence of the Organization and its members, which our suggestions had been adopted that the Department’s School of Governance shall be in charge of the entire process without any ulterior motives to collapse the interest of the Organization.

It is also with confidence through commitment to announce that as part of our achievements regarding the K53 GDE program that shall include each and every member of the PEC including all City Regions to be offered an opportunity to form part. The PEC further applied energies to condemn the PUBLICATION of MATRIC RESULTS which led to giving a political responsibility to the office of the Chairperson to writing positively again to the MEC about this NATIONAL CRISIS and ensure that our Province followed by others is not implicated.

As we are in the 16 days of activism against women and children abuse, we urged all our Regions to be the most active structures in the fight against GENDER BASED VIOLENCE programs and develop their own related programs against GBV and forward them o the PSO so that the PEC can package all ideas into one stipulated Program of Action.

Statement of the 18th National Executive of COSAS on Looting and Xenophobic Attacks, Gender-Based Violence, School Safety and Prelim Examinations

Members of the Media,
Comrades and Compatriots,
Fellow Learners

As the gigantic students’ movement in Africa we are saddened by the current spade of violence meted out against foreign nationals, accusing them of taking jobs and contributing immensely to the alarming rate of crime and drug related activities in the country.

Yes, we agree that this may be genuine laments, but we totally don’t see any logic in vandalising, looting and burning of stores and other property as an answer to the pending challenge. This is pure criminality and we urge fellow patriotic South Africans to refrain from partaking on such activities. After having conquered the demon of apartheid post 1994 we had said that we should work towards the realisation of free, non-racial, non-s*xist, peaceful and prosperous South Africa where no guns shall kill, injure or torment every being now living.

Therefore, we call upon the minister of police General Bheki Cele to intensify police visibility on violent-riddled spots and if needs be necessitating the deployment of SANDF to arrest the situation. We cannot continue defiling our beloved country’s soil by spilling blood, at times innocent blood of children, disabled and elderly citizens caught in a xenophobic skirmish.

On Gender-Based Violence
Patriarchy remains stubbornly prevalent and its brutal dominance is deeply felt within and beyond borders of South Africa. Despite government efforts to curb the hideous and barbaric acts of abusing the most vulnerable people in the society which are children and women, has not yet attain victory. The kidnapping of a 6 year old Amy-Leigh De Jager from Laerskool Kollegepark, Vanderbijlpark, the brutal murder of Boxing Champion Leighandre “Baby Lee” Jegels who was shot and killed by her police officer boyfriend and the thoughtless r**e and murder of a 19 year old, first year University Cape Town student, is a clear demonstration of patriarchy that is constantly baring its fangs on women.

We endlessly witness the true reflection of a society where wrong parental patterns breed boys who later become abusive men who are not properly raised to co-exist with the opposite s*x. As the students’ movement we strongly condemn all acts of gender-based violence on women and children. We also call on all law enforcement agencies to decisively and harshly deal with these criminals and hooligans who continue to terrorize innocent and vulnerable women and children.

Women in all walks of life assumed the responsibility of rearing children and doing odd jobs such as home chores and thus continue to depend on their partners on critical aspects of survival, thus places them on the periphery of the hierarchy. The women empowerment programmes have done much to integrate women into platforms that sought to promote women independency recognition of the value and the role they play in developing society and the country at large.

Former Burkina Faso President Thomas Sankara once said ‘’ the liberation of women is not an act of charity or a humanitarian gesture, it is the precondition of the revolution and affirmation of its victory, when we create a country that unleashes the unlimited human potential that is the foundation at which women liberation emanates”.

On School Safety
We remain deeply concerned about the scourge of infrastructure backlogs in schools, where learners have fallen and died in pit toilets, roofs of classrooms have caved in, windows, chairs, tables and doors are broken. Schools have become a disaster zone, especially in townships and rural areas.

Gangsterism, bullying and violence inside school premises have turned young children into dangerous human beings in schools and communities, especially in the Cape Flats. School learners are living in fear and has therefore caused a serious drop in attendance rate at many schools. Drugs and alcohol abuse are destroying the future and lives of many young and innocent souls.

As COSAS we are very concerned by the minimal or no action and lack of leadership form the ruling party. School learners are being kidnapped and threatened by African Foreign Nationals in our schools, schools are going up in flames and pupils are learning with fear. The ANC, its led government and Law Enforcement Agencies should act swiftly in combating all forms of criminal elements and activities in and around our schools. “You Burn My School, You Burn My Future”.

On Prelim Examinations
We want to wish all matriculants the best of luck during their prelim examinations which commenced on the 2nd September 2019. We encourage all learners to channel all their efforts into their studies and going against all odds in achieving academic excellence. Learners should eliminate distractions during studying or revision sessions, they must make valuable time to study, get plenty of rest before an exam and read questions carefully when answering.

Congress of South African Student Congress(COSAS) Gauteng Province.

Press release.
04 September 2019

“The most potent weapon in the hands of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed” Steve Bantu Biko.

In the month of September we remember our fallen hero Steve Bantu Biko who was a black Consciousness Movement idealist, May his revolutionary spirit live amongst us all as young revolutionaries.

The war against Black women continues unabated despite government dedicating one month every year to women. The murder of Uyinene Mrwetyana is symptomatic of this ongoing war. COSAS calls on black men in particular to stop the war on black women and themselves.

The is a war in the black community, the black man has become a violent subhuman who doesn't hesitate to violate and take lives. The nation and families must increase awareness and education on violence in the black communities especially gender based violences.

We must refuse to lose the war against women oppression. May this tragic murder of a young black woman galvanize society to say "enough is enough" may the death of Uyinene not be in vain.

As Congress of South African Student Movement we note that this corporal punishment which we reject in schools it continues to take place at home’s and we condemn that with the contempt it deserves, the must be a way on how to mentor your child but corporal punishment has never been a solution to our problems in society.
We understand that parenting it is not a once of thing, it must be a daily base practice.

We advise the South African Government to bring amicable solutions towards our problems as a nation because we can’t experience victimization of children and women on daily basis of our lives it must come to an end.

We also note that within the Mass Democratic Movement there are those who are opportunistic who want to be seen at the forefront when pertinent issues are finding expression on social media platforms, but they are not on the ground to bring Programs that will educate young man from their childhood that women deserve to be respected and treated with care and love we condemn that behavior.

We note the instability in our country were we see foreign Nationals being brutally killed across the country and the government seem to be very silent on issues affecting the entire society, and our learners are also compromised in this process because it is not safe for them to attend school around places where there is violence. What makes us very concerned is that this compromise the academic enterprise of students and matriculants are writing their preliminary examinations which might affect their performance academically.

NSFAS applications are now officially opened we therefore advise all matriculants to apply on time so that they could not experience funding constraints when they enroll for Universities and Colleges.

We wish all the best to the learners who are writing their examination

COSAS GAUTENG
18th PEC

Receive our warm revolutionary greetings from the organization of Ephraim Mogale. It is in the month of August that we remember our first female President Sandra Baloyi, as we are celebrating South Africa is celebrating Women's month. It is in this month that we remember a student activist who was first to be shot by the apartheid police during the Atteridgeville Student Uprising in August 1976, Irene Phalatsi.

We would like acknowledge the resolutions of the NEC Meeting that set on the 2nd to the 4th of August 2019 in Emfuleni municipality. This being our first NEC meeting since we have been elected to congress, the NEC welcomed us to the NEC. Many critical issues were addressed. The NEC agreed on arranging a meeting with the department of Basic Education in order to find common ground on how to best overcome the classroom struggle, issues such as lack of qualified teachers, lack of infrastructure, schools malnutrition, colonialsed education system and many more.

The NEC further resolved on the disbandment of KZN, re appointment of WC PTT and taking administration of EC. In the process the house raised a motion of no confidence to the first Deputy Secretary General Cde Mzwakhe Gwegwe. This decision was taken to ensure that the organization works effectively. We have also noted the insults directed to the leaders who were brave to raise a motion of no confidence and to vote in favour of this motion against the first DSG.

We are fully aware that this insults are part of a well orchestrated plan by the President and the Former first DSG to divide the organization so that Mzwakhe Gwegwe can become the Secretary General of the students movement. It has come to our attention about the divisive behaviour of President Comrade John Macheke and we call upon his summon to the National Disciplinary Committee, the President has committed countless and as Gauteng we feel that it is time necessary measures are taken against such behavior.

On the 05th July 2019 the Provicial Executive Committee took a sober decision to take administration of three regions Namely Ekhuruleni, Westrand and Tshwane, we therefore send a Stern warning to Comrades in Ekhuruleni to desist from sending communique and informing members that the is a regional conference on the 11th August 2019, the PEC will communicate a date for conferences in this regions and any conference that will take place without the approval of the PEC will not be recognized.

COSAS GAUTENG would like to wish good luck to the class of 2019 in their preliminary exams and we remain committed into ensuring that learning and teaching happens in a healthy environment and all learner's are able to access quality education in Gauteng.

Yours in student Revolution
