On Sunday, September 13, the Holocaust team provided a pop up concert for 11 Holocaust Survivors at 4 different homes. Gus Garay on guitar and vocals, Justin Holzer on percussion, Liz Garay- 15 on violin , Julia Johnson 17 on Flute . This is the second pop up concert for Gus , Liz and Julia. They find it so rewarding bringing isolated seniors the joy of music, and cant wait to do it again.

Gabe Richman , 9 years old, a 4th grader at Epstein School provided the Holocaust survivors with the sound of the Shofar. Gabe is the Great Granddaughter of 4 Holocaust Survivors. She wanted to help out by making sure the survivors were happy and they all heard the shofar blasts. Doing this helped her feel connected to her great grandparents whom she never had the chance to meet.

The 11 Survivors were so thrilled and felt so special.

To celebrate our JF&CS Aviv Staff, we will spotlight a different staff member once a month! This month, we are highlighting Georgia Gunter, Aviv Geriatric Care Manager.

“I think my very first day on the job is my favorite JF&CS memory. I was excited to be working at an organization I had known about and collaborated with for many years when I was at the MJCCA. And to find out I would be working with some amazing and friendly co-workers was icing on the cake. Shout out to Debbie Dooley who recommended me for the job and to Michael Osborne who also started at the agency on my first day. Since we knew each other from way back, it was fun training together”

Thank you, Georgia, for everything you do!

How Do You Keep Your Brain Healthy During COVID-19? 23/09/2020

“In the beginning of the pandemic, most of us were doing fairly well emotionally, physically and cognitively, but the longer we are isolating at home, the harder it is for many of us to stay positive. Older adults and those with compromised immune systems are told to stay home as much as possible and to socially distance ourselves from others. Unfortunately, this can lead to decreased physical, cognitive and emotional health. In order for us to maintain or improve our brain health, we need to regularly exercise our bodies and minds and also be socially engaged with others,” says Georgia Gunter, JF&CS Geriatric Care Manager.

Letting Go with Tashlich 17/09/2020

In preparation of the High Holy Days, Rabbi Beiner shares thoughts on the ceremony of Tashlich: “Tashlich is an opportunity to learn how to let go, to figure out what needs to be released into the water: sins, resentments, remorse, guilt, relationships or behaviors that no longer serve us. That which we send down the river become memories, further away, less painful.”

High Holy Days: Finding Community During a Time of Isolation 15/09/2020

As Rosh Hashanah approaches, Rabbi Beiner shares thoughts and advice for the New Year: “It’s hard not to approach the High Holy Days this year from a perspective of what won’t be. We will not be gathering in synagogues to pray and socialize with our communities; loved ones who live a plane ride away won’t be traveling home to celebrate; and, instead of crowded holiday tables, we’ll be having our meals with those in our household, to name a few.”
