The voter suppression bill that recently passed the House of Representatives—the SAVE Act, I believe it’s called—is nothing more than an attempt to rig future elections in favor of the Republicans. While they claim it simply requires a voter ID, as the saying goes, "the devil is in the details."
First, for all practical purposes, it would end voting by mail, including absentee voting. It would also restrict where we can register to vote. Furthermore, it would require a passport or a certified birth certificate—not just a photocopied version. This creates a specific hurdle for women; if a woman gets married and cannot change her name in time for the election, she may be unable to vote.
Think about who typically lacks a passport: people who don't leave the country or cannot afford international travel. Additionally, how many people have a certified copy of their birth certificate readily available? The MAGA Republicans know they cannot win a fair election, so they are trying to fix the outcome through this fine print.
While this law could be challenged in court, the process might take years, and by then, the damage would already be done. If you have recently married, are living with a disability that prevents you from reaching the polls, or have moved and lack a certified birth certificate, passport, or current military ID, you may be unable to register or vote at all.
