The Gambia Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) is a multi-sector regulator established by an Act of the National Assembly of The Gambia.

The Chief Executive Officer of Oil Trading and Logistics (OTL) Africa Downstream, Mrs. Joyce Akabogu, accompanied by the Programs Executive, Ms. Naomi Emeh, paid a two-day courtesy visit to The Gambia, during which they visited the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) from 2nd to 3rd June 2026.
During the visit, the delegation held discussions with PURA's Senior Management and the Honorable Minister of Petroleum, Energy, and Mines on opportunities to strengthen collaboration within The Gambia’s petroleum downstream sector.
The engagement focused on regulatory best practices, regional cooperation, investment opportunities, and strategic partnerships to support the sector's growth and sustainability.
A key highlight of the visit was a roundtable discussion with downstream sector operators, providing a platform to discuss industry challenges, capacity-building opportunities, business partnerships, and potential new sources of petroleum product supply for The Gambia.
The visit underscored the importance of collaboration and strategic partnerships in promoting innovation, investment, and sustainable development across Africa's energy sector.

Today marked the successful conclusion of the PURA Student Ambassador Initiative Phase III in Soma, LRR.

The final day featured an engaging training session facilitated by the University of The Gambia Debate Association, followed by a debate competition among four participating schools aimed at strengthening students’ knowledge, confidence, and advocacy skills on consumer rights and public utilities regulation.

At the end of the engagement, all participating schools were recognised as winners for their outstanding participation and commitment.

Kwinella Senior Secondary School emerged as 1st place winner and received a cash prize of D40,000.00

Tahir Senior Secondary School secured 2nd place with a cash prize of D30,000.00

Soma Senior Secondary School took 3rd place and received D20,000.00

Kaiaf Senior Secondary School placed 4th and received a token of D10,000.00

The initiative continues to empower young people to become informed consumer advocates and active contributors to national development.

of the PURA Student Ambassador Initiative Phase III (3 )in Soma, the ambassadors took an insightful tour to the PURA key MNO ‘s customer care outlets (Qcell ,Africell ,Commium & Gamcel/Gamtel) and in the same vein visited the Soma NAWEC Water Treatment Plant , as well as the O.M.V.G. facility.

Through these visits, they saw firsthand how public utilities operate, how customer care is delivered, and how crucial these services are to everyday life. This hands-on experience is empowering them to be active advocates for consumer rights and improved service delivery.

12th May 2026, marks the official opening of the PURA Student Ambassador Programme in Soma, featuring four different schools (Qwinella Senior Secoundary ,Tahir Ahmadia Senior Secoundary School, Kaif Senior Secoundary and Soma Senior Secoundary) .

The introduction of this School Debate Initiative aims at strengthening consumer awareness among young people.

The programme seeks to nurture confident, informed, and engaged students through dialogue, critical thinking, and advocacy on issues surrounding public utilities and consumer rights.

A new generation of consumer advocates is rising.
