USS Makin Island Ombudsman USS Makin Island Ombudsman Welcome to the USS Makin Island Ombudsman Page! on September 14th, 1970. What is an Ombudsman? Thank you. Gung Ho!

A little about us:

The Navy Ombudsman Program was started by CNO Admiral Elmo Zumwalt, Jr. We are spouses of an active-duty command member and selected by the Commanding Officer. We went through Basic Ombudsman Training and continue with Advanced Trainings throughout the year. Here in San Diego, we are also given opportunities to meet with some of the resources at their place of business to get a more thorough understanding of how they can help our families. We also introduce ourselves and what our role is during INDOC for the sailors that are new to the command. Our sailors know we are a resource for assistance for their families, which in turn allows them to focus on the mission at hand. We are not meant to solve their family’s problems, but to give resources and information to help them to do so. We are also a communication link between the Command and families as needed. We provide resources, information, and local happenings through this page and monthly USS Makin Island Ombudsman Newsletter via email. The resources and information we give out is for servicemembers and their families. Much of the information can be accessed anywhere in the U.S., but some is specific to the San Diego area. Our monthly email newsletter is sent to the addresses provided by USS Makin Island sailors. The sailors can send us an email via their USS Makin Island command email address. They will need to include the recipient’s name, relationship to the sailor, and the email address to have someone added. We ask you to please send any questions or issues to us via Private Message when done so through Facebook to maintain confidentiality. We can also be reached by email at [email protected] or phone at 619-634-6555. Hilary Howell

Ever wonder what it’s like?

The phone rings or a letter arrives, and everything stops. The whole house reaches for it, trying to take in every word at once. For a moment, the distance closes. Even a quick “I love you. I’m doing well. I can’t wait to see you!” can warm both sides of a deployment long after the call ends or the letter is folded away and put away in that super special place.

A service member deploys, but the separation belongs to the friends and family, too. Some service members don’t have a familiar voice or handwriting waiting for them, so family becomes the people serving beside them.

On this National Day of the Deployed, Blue Star Families honors both ends of every call and every letter, along with those who find family beside them far from home.

OPSEC Reminders:

It is important to keep OPSEC at ALL times. Neither you or your Sailor should be sharing ANY information regarding location of ship or port calls over any social media (including WhatsApp, Facebook, Snapchat, emails, phone calls, etc.) Anything can be hacked. If it isn’t a secret computer, it isn’t the place to share information.

Information that is shared online, even on encrypted platforms, is never truly secured or un-hackable. People who know what there are doing can still intercept transmissions and know where to target the end users. That is why it is safest to always assume someone is listening in on communications, as all free apps have us the users as the product to be sold.

Please be mindful when communicating. Ask your sailors to share about port calls after they have pulled into a location and not before. Our goal is to keep our MKI family safe.
