Sri Lanka emerges as the fastest-growing destination for Australian travelers in 2025 🇱🇰🇦🇺

Australia continues to be a key summer market for Sri Lanka Tourism. Through sustained trade engagement, advertising, and consumer campaigns, Sri Lanka has achieved a major milestone—ranking as the fastest-growing destination among Australian outbound travelers, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

This momentum is set to grow further with direct flights from Melbourne to Colombo launching in August 2026 via Jetstar ✈️

Alongside Australia, strong growth is also seen from key markets such as Japan, Vietnam, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and emerging markets including Israel and Nepal, reinforcing Sri Lanka’s rising global appeal.

A proud moment for Sri Lanka Tourism—and a strong signal of what’s ahead.

2026 New Year Message from Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism.

As Sri Lanka enters the New Year 2026, the Ministry reaffirms its commitment to rebuilding the nation through principled global engagement, dignified foreign employment, and a modern, sustainable tourism economy. This is a moment for disciplined reform and renewed confidence.

Sri Lanka’s foreign policy is being advanced with clarity and balance strengthening bilateral and multilateral partnerships, restoring international trust, and positioning the country as a reliable and constructive global partner. Diplomacy today must directly support economic recovery, investment, trade access, and national security.

Foreign employment remains a vital pillar of our economy. In 2026, the Ministry’s priority is to protect Sri Lankan workers abroad, expand safe and legal migration pathways, improve skills recognition, and ensure dignity, welfare, and fair treatment for every Sri Lankan serving overseas. A skilled and protected workforce strengthens both remittances and national credibility.

Tourism is being repositioned toward quality, sustainability, and resilience. Our focus is on environmentally responsible tourism, higher value offerings, regional balance, and global standards that protect communities while enhancing Sri Lanka’s international brand.

Rebuilding Sri Lanka requires institutional strength, clean governance, and active engagement with the world. Guided by the Government’s vision, the Ministry will continue to work with international partners, the private sector, and the Sri Lankan diaspora to secure growth, opportunity, and long-term national stability in 2026 and beyond.

Vijitha Herath

Sri Lanka Is Ready: Tourism Rebounds with Renewed Confidence
Sri Lanka Tourism is entering a new chapter of recovery and growth following years of challenges - from the Easter attacks and the global pandemic to the recent “Ditwah” cyclonic disaster. Despite these setbacks, the sector is showing strong resilience and renewed momentum.
From 1 January to 8 December 2025, Sri Lanka recorded 2.15 million tourist arrivals, including 50,222 visitors in the first week of December alone. November also marked the highest arrivals for that month in five years, with India leading the market.
All tourism sites across the island are fully open, safe, and operating with enhanced safety measures. Key destinations such as the Southern Coast, Ella, and the Hill Country are bustling with visitors enjoying Sri Lanka’s natural beauty, culture, and hospitality.
SLTPB has requested overseas missions to conduct networking sessions with tour operators and media, alongside arranging targeted media FAM trips to support market recovery.
Last week, the cruise vessel “Mein Schiff” arrived with 2,000 passengers, generating positive media coverage and strong visitor feedback. Meanwhile, a South Korean Buddhist delegation visiting Sri Lanka transformed their pilgrimage into a humanitarian effort, distributing essential supplies to communities affected by the “Ditwah” disaster - with another delegation expected soon.
Tourists continue to explore Sri Lanka’s iconic attractions, praising the warmth, resilience, and unforgettable experiences the island offers. Many have expressed their intention to return, reaffirming Sri Lanka’s enduring appeal.
No storm or cyclone can diminish the spirit of Sri Lankan hospitality. With every heartfelt “Ayubowan”, the island welcomes the world once again - stronger, safer, and ready for a new chapter in tourism.
