The ballot challenge case will now head to the state Court of Appeals. According to the News & Observer, if the “Supreme Court agreed to skip the appellate court, as the elections board requested, and then deadlocked on the case, the Wake judge’s ruling would be final.” More updates to come.

Vote tallying is complete and the results are clear– voters chose to return Justice Allison Riggs to the NC Supreme Court. Calling for a recount in such a closely contested race is normal and recounts are a healthy part of our electoral process as they help affirm the decisions of voters and bolster confidence in our democracy. What’s abnormal is Republican Jefferson Griffin challenging the validity of more than 600,000 ballots, rather than gracefully conceding after the recount.

What Jefferson Griffin and the Republican Party are doing in NC is an attempt to disqualify thousands of eligible voters and overturn the results of a legitimate election. These actions are harmful to democracy, and unfortunately, represent an ongoing strategy for the NC GOP: when Republicans lose elections, they seek to disenfranchise voters.

The voters gave more votes to Allison Riggs than Jefferson Griffin, and we will protect and defend these voters’ right to participate in our democracy. No one – not a candidate, not a party, not the courts – should be able to disenfranchise voters simply because they don’t like the results of an election.

Senate Bill HB 382 is a power grab disguised as hurricane relief. It strips power from incoming elected Democrats and provides $0 in immediate funds for the people of Western North Carolina. That's why these three WNC Republicans voted against it on the House floor, and why Governor Cooper vetoed it. The NC Senate has already voted to override the veto, but if these three vote to sustain Governor Cooper's veto when the house votes on Dec. 11, this bill will not become law. Call them now and thank them for standing strong for the people of WNC and ask them to sustain the Governor's veto and demand a clean relief bill.
