Columbia has been named the best city in America for women to live!

Columbia earned the No. 1 ranking out of 182 cities nationwide thanks to high wages, low unemployment, and excellent health care. Women here enjoy the highest median income in the country, adjusted for cost of living, at $61,778 and a poverty rate of just 8.2%—one of the lowest in the nation. Our community also ranks in the top 10 for women’s life expectancy and among the top 15 for access to cancer screenings and mammograms.

With a 4% unemployment rate, nearly one-fourth of businesses owned by women, and one of the most active female communities in the U.S., Columbia continues to shine as a model of opportunity, health, and empowerment.

Maryland has once again been ranked the second-happiest state in America in 2025, according to WalletHub’s annual Happiest States in America report. Despite growing concerns about national well-being (with only 44% of Americans saying they are “very satisfied” with their lives) Maryland continues to stand out as a place where people feel fulfilled and supported.

Why Maryland Ranked So High:

WalletHub evaluated all 50 states using 30 key metrics across three major categories: Emotional & Physical Well‑Being, Work Environment, and Community & Environment.

Maryland excelled in several areas:

- 3.2% unemployment rate, one of the lowest in the country
Highest share of households earning over $75,000

- 3rd-highest share of residents who like what they do and are motivated

- 3rd-highest share of people reporting strong emotional support and loving relationships

- 5th-lowest su***de rate in the U.S., a strong indicator of mental health support

Where Maryland Can Improve:

- 38th in adequate sleep rates

- 25th in average work hours, indicating longer workweeks than many other states

U.S. News & World Report recently ranked 859 U.S. cities with populations below 100,000 to come up with a list of the 15 best small cities in the country.
