⚾ It’s a Home Run for NY Inspires! The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum shared how its First in Class museum education model aligns school-group learning experiences with NY Inspires and New York State’s Portrait of a Graduate, building skills such as critical thinking, communication, collaboration, creativity, and confidence through inquiry and discovery.

Through its partnership with NYSED’s Office of Cultural Education, the Hall of Fame is demonstrating how museums can help bring the Portrait of a Graduate to life beyond the classroom, a model for cultural institutions across New York State as we work together to prepare students to learn, grow, create, work, and contribute.

Today, the Board of Regents authorized the New York Education Department to move forward with the next phase of NY Inspires, a historic transformation of education in New York State.

Beginning with students graduating in 2028, New York will transition to one State high school diploma. In addition, Regents examinations will continue to serve as rigorous measures of academic achievement but will no longer be a separate diploma requirement.

The changes are designed to provide a more complete picture of student achievement and create more opportunities for students to demonstrate what they know and can do. https://bit.ly/4itN1Wd

Missed our live Online Speaker Series? You can still join us.

Our September episode, “Remembering 9/11,” explores the records held by the New York State Archives that document the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center—and the work undertaken to heal, rebuild, and restore New York City and communities across the state in the aftermath.

If you missed the live presentation, the recording will be available soon. Stay tuned for the opportunity to watch and reflect on these important records, the stories they preserve, and the resilience of New Yorkers in the years that followed.

The September 11, 2001 Collection, held by the NYS Library's Manuscripts and Special Collections, consists of newspapers, magazines, and ephemera containing records, memorials, accounts of the immediate aftermath, and reflections and remembrances. In September 2001, a Special Collections librarian requested that we keep the first post-9/11 issue of every publication received at the time. That staff had the forethought, in those early, uncertain moments, to collect those immediate news reports highlights a feature of Special Collections: our collections are not only records of the past, but also a dynamic space to preserve records of the present.

Additional materials include a collection of photographs documenting artwork in the World Trade Center before, and sometimes after, the September 11 attacks. The NYS Library is also the new home of the 9/11 Tribute Museum book collection, which was transferred to our care after the Tribute Museum closed in 2023.

Visitors to the NYS Library’s 7th floor can view a September 11 pop-up exhibit highlighting impacts on students and education.

On this Patriot Day, we remember the 25th Anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center. This detail of an FDNY Squad 1 truck carries a painful history. Squad 1—an elite rescue company—lost 12 of its members that day. The worn outline where someone attempted to cut away the company emblem is a quiet reminder of the men who carried it, and the sacrifice they made. https://digitalcollections.archives.nysed.gov/Detail/objects/45332

NY Inspires: Raising Expectations. Expanding Opportunity. Transforming Education.

Take a few minutes to read Commissioner Rosa’s message on NY Inspires, New York’s vision for making sure every student graduates ready for what comes next. We’re keeping New York’s high standards, while giving students more rigorous ways to show what they know and can do, not just through exams, but through meaningful demonstrations of learning.
