REPORT ON THE JUST CONCLUDED OGUN STATE LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTIONS
Prepared for Abeokuta City Electorates
Date: 16th November 2024
The Ogun State Local Government Elections have come to a close, marking another significant milestone in the democratic process within our state. Abeokuta and its environs were central to this event, as they showcased both the strengths and the challenges inherent in our electoral system. This report provides an overview of the election, highlighting observations from our Election Observer Volunteers, addressing key issues, and offering words of encouragement to citizens and elected leaders.
Observations from the Field
Our Election Observer Volunteers worked tirelessly to monitor the conduct of the elections and reported the following:
1. Lateness of Electoral Officers:
In many polling units, electoral officers arrived late, causing delays in the commencement of voting. This left many voters frustrated and disillusioned.
2. Operational Challenges at Polling Units:
Inadequate materials, such as ballot papers and ink, were observed in some areas.
Multiple voting was witnessed in some polling units.
Poor crowd management led to disorderliness in a few polling units, among other irregularities.
3. Voter Apathy:
The turnout was lower than expected, with many citizens expressing dissatisfaction with the process. This points to a growing need for civic reorientation and trust-building in the electoral system.
Encouragement to Citizens
While these issues are concerning, they should not deter us from participating in future elections. Democracy thrives when citizens remain committed to their civic duties, even in the face of challenges. Abeokuta City Electorates urges all residents of Abeokuta and its environs to continue to engage actively in the democratic process. Your vote remains your power to influence change.
Message to the Elected Leaders
To the newly elected leaders, we extend our warm congratulations. However, the true celebration begins when you deliver on the dividends of democracy. The electorate has entrusted you with their mandate, and it is your responsibility to:
Provide transparent governance.
Address the pressing needs of your communities.
Promote inclusive development that leaves no one behind.
