How did apple trees come to grow on a remote wilderness island in Lake Superior?
NPLSF board member Tim Cochrane worked at Isle Royale early in his career, and he developed an appreciation for the island's apples and its unique history.
Now retired from decades in the National Park Service, including as Superintendent of Grand Portage National Monument, Tim is a popular author and historian. He recently took a deep dive into the mystery of Isle Royale’s apple trees. Learn what he found and stay tuned for more fascinating stories!

We last week in Washington D.C with our friends and colleagues from and national park partners from across the country. Representing 5 national park units in three states, we had a busy schedule of meetings with congressional delegations from Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan. In partnership with the Grand Marais Art Colony and the National Parks of Lake Superior Foundation, this new program invites artists to immerse themselves in the natural beauty, cultural history, and living stories of Gichi-Onigaming / Grand Portage.
Selected artists will have the opportunity to engage with the Monument’s deep cultural and historical significance, and create work inspired by this remarkable place.
