The Rosa Luxemburg Foundation is an internationally operating, progressive non-profit institution for civic education.

In cooperation with many organizations around the globe, it works on democratic and social participation, empowerment of disadvantaged groups, alternatives for economic and social development, and peaceful conflict resolution. The New York Office serves two major tasks: to work around issues concerning the United Nations and to engage in dialogue with North American progressives in universities, unions, social movements, and politics.

We invited Pulitzer Prize finalist Suzy Hansen to our New York office at the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation, and the place was packed. She spoke with Sean Henry Jacobs from the Graduate Programs in International Affairs at The New School and journalist Natasha Lennard about her new book, “From Life Itself: Turkey, Istanbul, and a Neighborhood in the Age of Erdoğan.” The parallels to the U.S. and elsewhere provided plenty of food for thought.
The book is out now and can be ordered here: https://us.macmillan.com/books/9780374298432/fromlifeitself/

The climate crisis and the inequality crisis have the same root. And the same solution.

The biggest polluters, fossil fuel corporations, and the ultra-rich have extracted wealth from people and planet for decades. And they’ve paid almost nothing for the damage.

A fair tax system changes that.
Tax the rich.
Tax fossil fuel profits.
Make multinationals pay their share.
Fund the transition to a livable planet.

Today’s tax rules were written by colonial powers and historic emitters, designed to protect extractors, not communities. That can end with a UN Tax Convention.

Tax justice is climate justice.

At our annual meeting in Washington, D.C., the Peace and Security Funders Group discussed what we can do to end the wars in Iran, Ukraine, Palestine, Sudan, and elsewhere, as well as how to successfully fight back against militarism.

The Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung New York Office is proud to have been a member of this organization since 2024.

This past weekend, the traditional demonstrations and celebrations of the labor movement took place once again around the world to mark May 1. But did you know that these traditions originated 140 years ago in the United States, and what role Germans played in them? Milan Mentz looked back on this history for the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation in New York.

This past Saturday, we were proud to co-sponsor the Second Global Summit on Indigenous Peacebuilding, held alongside the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues in New York.

Indigenous activists from around the world came together to build a shared agenda, strengthen alliances, and advance collective strategies in defense of their rights, territories, and self-determination. We are honored to support this essential and ongoing work.

Last Thursday, RLS-NYC brought together leading scholars to ask a pressing question: Can housing be affordable again?

Moderated by Talja Blokland (Max Weber Chair in German and European Studies at NYU), the discussion featured Andrej Holm (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin), Loretta Lees (Boston University), and Sophie Gonick (NYU SCA) — examining the history of privatization and social movements in European cities and what New York City can draw from these experiences.

Affordable housing is not just a local crisis — it is a global challenge that demands collective solutions.

Getting boys in on climate action - The Hechinger Report 28/04/2026

Pleased to share this interview with Dr. Joseph Henderson, whose work we at RLS supported.

It explores a key question for climate justice education: how do we meaningfully engage boys in climate action toward agency, responsibility, and collective action?

Getting boys in on climate action - The Hechinger Report Studies suggest girls care more about the planet and climate action. A new project explores how schools and other institutions can encourage more boys to act, too

Thank you Bhaskar Sunkara for delivering the 2026 Ellen Meiksins Wood Lecture and to the Faculty of Arts, Toronto Metropolitan University and the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung - New York Office for hosting and sponsoring this event!

"It’s no longer enough to argue that the alternative to capitalism, or an alternative to capitalism, is politically feasible. We must argue and convince people that it’s technically possible."

Photos from the event are now available on our Flickr Album: https://flic.kr/s/aHBqjCS1T3

Socialism in Canada?

The Broadbent Institute | Institut Broadbent is a think tank for the Canada’s NDP / Le NPD du Canada. This social democratic party is part of the opposition in the Canadian Parliament and forms the government in half of Canada’s provinces. In the U.S., it would be the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, up to and including its far left. With the recent election of Avi Lewis as its new leader, the party has shifted further to the left.

Therefore, it was a fortunate coincidence that the Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung began an official partnership with the Broadbent Institute this year for the first time. The Foundation’s New York office, which is also responsible for Canada, made this collaboration possible. We partnered with them for this year's Ellen Meiksins Wood Lecture, held annually in collaboration with Toronto Metropolitan University.

Bhaskar Sunkara, founder of Jacobin magazine, received the 2026 award. In his speech, Sunkara described how socialism could work in the real world. In September, his book The Blueprint, which he co-authored with Mike Beggs and Ben Burgis, will be published. His remarks were met with great applause from the audience of over 100 people.

This year's event marked the beginning of a new partnership between the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung and the Broadbent Institute.
