Civic Engagement: The Key to A Better Community and Our Children’s Future
This month our focus is on the Charm City of Baltimore, Maryland and the Counties of the 7th U.S. Congressional District. If you are from the B’more area or have ever visited the area, you know that it is a place full of pride - no matter where you live. The challenge? Getting folks to participate in their own improvement. We don’t lack potential- not at all. What we do lack is civic engagement.
Let’s face it, those of us who vote, finally do it when we just can’t take it anymore and look no further than for the name of someone on the ballot that looks familiar. Typically, we make sure that they have signs up around town and that’s where the engagement stops. So what happens: We get the same old results in our region that we have been getting for years - the very definition of insanity.
The solution: start teaching our children now about civic engagement. Make sure they understand that it is about community better and protecting the future of the next generation. While it is executed through the political process, they must told that they should never allow the political process to execute them. Improving the lives of the community must be the goal.
On JUNE 2, 2020, the Primaries will see the civic engagement train of voting culminate with new presidential, congressional, mayoral, council, judicial, and school board candidates for the November general election. Let’s take our engagement to the next level. Don’t vote by rote. Actually consider improving your communities and teach younger generations to do the same.
