In a few minutes I will vote against H.R. 9, one of the most fiscally irresponsible, flagrantly hypocritical bills the House GOP has brought to the floor this Congress. This one-time, unpaid-for bill will add $46 billion to our deficit and does not give small businesses the long-term relief they need.

I am excited to announce that my friend and colleague Congressman Larry Kissell (D-NC) joined the Blue Dog Coalition today.
Larry is not only a true fiscal conservative, he is one of the hardest working and most principled leaders I have ever had the privilege of working with in Congress. We are honored to have him join our Blue Dog family.
Yesterday the House passed the bipartisan Sportsmen's Heritage Act of 2012, a bill I crafted with my fellow leaders of the Congressional Sportsmen's Caucus. This landmark legislative package expands opportunities for sportsmen and helps maintain funding for critical wildlife conservation programs.

I was pleased to see the STOCK Act pass the House today with overwhelming bipartisan support by a margin of 417-2. I cosponsored and voted for this common-sense legislation, which makes it clear that rules against insider trading apply to Members of Congress and congressional staff.
After much consideration and prayer, I have made the decision not to seek re-election in 2012. I have experienced no greater honor than serving the people of North Carolina’s 11th Congressional District over the past five years. Please read my full statement on my website: http://1.usa.gov/A0Bb8M

Rep. Shuler Statement on President Obama's State of the Union Address | Congressman Heath Shuler,.. Washington, D.C. – U.S. Representative Heath Shuler released the following statement tonight in response to President Obama's State of the Union address:
Yesterday House Republican leadership put partisan politics before the American people when they refused to allow a vote on the bipartisan tax extenders bill. This bill passed the Senate 89-10 with overwhelming bipartisan support, including 39 Republican Senators, and would have passed the House if the GOP had allowed it to come to the floor. Instead, middle class families in Western North Carolina and across the country who are already struggling to make ends meet will see their taxes increase because of the GOP's refusal to compromise.
I am thrilled that NC has been awarded a $69.9 million grant from the prestigious "Race to the Top Early Learning Challenge" fund for early childhood education. I was proud to support North Carolina's application throughout the competition and applaud our state educational leaders for their vision to provide high-quality early learning opportunities for all.
