Is it time to service your fire pump set?

Check your pump set and the date of your last service - it might be time to schedule your next one!

There is no time like the present, especially as September is National Fire Protection Month.

Why Regular Servicing and Routine Maintenance Matter:

✅ Regular maintenance helps ensure your fire pump performs reliably when you need it most.
✅ Routine servicing can extend the lifespan of your equipment and help reduce unexpected breakdowns.
✅ Keeping your system properly maintained helps ensure it is ready to perform in an emergency.

In accordance with SANS 10287, fire pump systems must be serviced at least once per year by a qualified and reputable fire-pump specialist.

Kynotek is fully equipped to provide SANS-compliant annual servicing and system support.

Don’t wait for an emergency to discover a failure. Protect your property, maintain your equipment and stay compliant.

CAN YOU USE A CONTAINERISED PUMP ROOM FOR EVERY FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEM?

No — and that’s important.

A containerised pump room can offer significant advantages in the right application, but the standard governing the project determines whether the enclosure is suitable.

For example:

🔴 ASIB 12th Edition sprinkler installations

A converted shipping container does not satisfy the pump house requirements. Where an ASIB Clearance Certificate is required, the pump house must comply with the ASIB Rules.

🟢 NFPA 20

A properly engineered detached containerised pump room can be suitable where the applicable separation distance, fire-rating, ventilation, drainage, lighting and access requirements are met.

🟢 Hydrant, hose reel and general industrial applications

Containerised pump rooms can be particularly well suited to these applications.

The important question therefore isn’t simply:

“Can we use a containerised pump room?”

It’s:

“What standard governs this project, and what does that standard require?”

At Kynotek, every pump set and Kynotek Modular Pump Room is engineered around the requirements of the individual project.

The standard determines the solution — not the other way around.

MODULAR PUMP ROOM vs TRADITIONAL PUMP ROOM — WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

Both serve the same fundamental purpose.

The difference is how they get there.

🏗️ TRADITIONAL PUMP ROOM

Built on site through a sequence of civil works, building, electrical installation and pipe fitting before the pump set can ultimately be commissioned.

🔥 KYNOTEK MODULAR PUMP ROOM

The enclosure, pumps, panels, pipework and ventilation are engineered as one assembly and manufactured under controlled workshop conditions while civil works continue on site.

Once ready, the unit is delivered to site as a substantially complete system.

This can mean:
→ Less time on site
→ Fewer trades to coordinate
→ Greater cost certainty
→ Workshop-controlled assembly and testing
→ One supplier responsible for the complete package
→ The ability to relocate the unit where required

But there is an important distinction:
The governing fire protection standard ultimately determines which type of pump room is appropriate for your project.

That’s why Kynotek designs each solution around the project’s actual requirements — rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.

WHY CHOOSE A MODULAR PUMP ROOM?

Traditional pump rooms are built on site involving multiple trades, multiple schedules and plenty of coordination.

A Kynotek Modular Pump Room changes that.

While civil works continue on site, your complete pump room is being built, piped and wired in our workshop.

The result?
✓ Faster installation — days of site activity instead of months of wet trades
✓ Greater cost certainty — reducing the variations associated with multiple trades
✓ Controlled quality — assembly and testing take place in a controlled workshop environment
✓ Single-point responsibility — pumps, panels, pipework, ventilation and enclosure from one supplier
✓ Relocatable — particularly valuable for mines, leased premises, phased developments and retrofit applications
✓ Secure by design — housed within a lockable steel enclosure

Kynotek doesn’t simply put a pump set inside a shipping container.

Our Modular Pump Rooms are purpose engineered as complete fire protection assemblies, designed and manufactured for the requirements of each project.

Less site coordination. More control. One complete solution.

FIRST AID FOR SMOKE INHALATION: What to Do After Escaping a Fire

Smoke inhalation can be life-threatening, even if someone appears to be okay. Symptoms can worsen over the next few hours, so always take smoke exposure seriously.

If someone has inhaled smoke:
✅ Move them to fresh air immediately.
✅ Call emergency services, even if they seem well.
✅ Check if they are breathing normally. If they are unconscious and not breathing, begin CPR if you're trained to do so.
✅ Keep them sitting upright to help make breathing easier.
✅ Loosen any tight clothing around the neck and chest.

⚠️ Seek urgent medical attention if they have:
• Difficulty breathing
• A hoarse or raspy voice
• Trouble swallowing
• Confusion or drowsiness
• Soot around the nose or mouth
• Black or dark-coloured mucus when coughing

Remember, smoke inhalation injuries aren't always immediately visible. Prompt medical assessment can make a critical difference.

🔥 SMOKE IS OFTEN MORE DANGEROUS THAN THE FIRE ITSELF.

Toxic smoke can overcome you within minutes, making it difficult to think, see or even breathe before the flames reach you.

⚠️ Why smoke is so deadly:
• It rapidly reduces the oxygen available to breathe.
• Carbon monoxide prevents your blood from carrying oxygen.
• Toxic gases released from burning plastics and fabrics damage your body's ability to use oxygen.
• Superheated smoke can burn your airways, while thick smoke reduces visibility and makes escape more difficult.

🏃 If you need to escape through smoke:
• Get low and crawl – the cleanest air is closest to the floor.
• Keep your head down (30–60 cm from the ground).
• Cover your nose and mouth with a damp cloth if possible.
• Take slow, shallow breaths.
• Stay calm and move quickly to the nearest safe exit.

Remember: In a fire, the smoke can reach you long before the flames do. Knowing how to react could save your life.
