FRANKFORT | MEC HANDS OVER JET BLASTING TRUCK TO MAFUBE LOCAL MUNICIPALITY, DEMANDS ACCOUNTABILITY FOR SERVICE DELIVERY
The Free State Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) and Human Settlements has handed over a jet blasting truck to Mafube Local Municipality in Frankfort to strengthen the municipality’s capacity to address sewer blockages and improve sanitation services.
The handover, led by MEC for COGTA and Human Settlements, Mr. Saki Mokoena, included a practical demonstration and training session to equip municipal personnel with the necessary skills to operate the specialised truck effectively.
Addressing community members and municipal leadership, MEC Mokoena emphasised that the provision of equipment must translate into tangible improvements in service delivery and the living conditions of residents.
However, the MEC expressed disappointment over the municipality’s failure to make visible progress in rehabilitating roads following the recent handover of road maintenance equipment.
He reminded the municipality that it had previously cited a lack of equipment as a major obstacle to road maintenance. Despite the Department responding to this challenge by providing the necessary machinery, the MEC said there had been no visible progress.
MEC Mokoena challenged the municipal leadership to take full responsibility and ensure that the equipment is utilised without further delay. He stressed that occupying public office comes with a responsibility to serve communities and deliver on commitments.
He further cautioned that individuals who are unable to fulfil the responsibilities entrusted to them should reconsider their suitability to hold public office.
The MEC expressed concern over the continued appointment of individuals who fail to discharge their responsibilities, emphasising that communities should not be deprived of essential services while government resources remain underutilised.
The Department reaffirmed its commitment to supporting municipalities through the provision of equipment, technical assistance and capacity-building initiatives. However, MEC Mokoena made it clear that such interventions must be accompanied by accountability, urgency and measurable improvements in service delivery.
His message to municipal leadership was clear: government equipment must be put to effective use, commitments must be honoured, and communities must experience meaningful improvements in service delivery.
