As October draws to a close, we reflect on two important observances that highlight the need for accountability, fairness and responsible service delivery: Ombuds Month and Transport Month. Although these observances focus on different areas of public life, they share a common purpose: promoting individual’s rights, strengthening public trust, and ensuring that institutions and services work in the best interests of the people they serve.
Ombuds Month provides an opportunity to raise awareness of the vital role Ombuds offices play in protecting the public and resolving complaints. As the month comes to an end, it is important to recognise that the work of Ombuds offices extends far beyond a commemorative period. Their contribution remains essential throughout the year in building a culture of fairness, transparency and accountability.
The observance of Ombuds Month alongside Transport Month presents an important opportunity for us to reflect on the relationship between accountability, service delivery and the everyday experiences of transport users.
Transport Month provides an opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of an efficient, affordable, accessible and safe transport system. It also encourages reflection on the City of Joburg responsibilities through the Transport Department including Rea vaya, Metrobus, and Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA).
However, when transport services fail to meet expected standards, members of the public may experience challenges such as poor service delivery, unfair treatment, unresolved complaints, accessibility barriers, or concerns relating to safety and accountability.
Our office provides an avenue for investigating complaints, addressing disputes and promoting fair administrative practices in the transport sector.
The connection between these two observances reminds us that good service delivery requires more than infrastructure and operational efficiency. It also requires institutions that listen to the public, respond to concerns and take responsibility for their decisions and actions.
