The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Mrs Thembeni kaMadlopha-Mthethwa, officially launched the KwaZulu-Natal H**p Seed Multiplication Programme and opened the 2026/27 H**p Planting Season on 8 October at KwaMaveshe Sports-ground in Ray Nkonyeni Local Municipality.

The initiative marks a significant milestone in advancing the objectives of the National Cannabis/H**p Master Plan, approved by the Cabinet in 2021, which positions h**p as a strategic agricultural commodity with the potential to stimulate economic growth.

With KwaZulu-Natal identified as one of only three provinces with high potential for h**p production, the programme presents an opportunity to strengthen the province’s agricultural value chains, promote agro-processing and expand opportunities for emerging and established farmers.

Speaking at the launch, MEC kaMadlopha-Mthethwa highlighted h**p’s potential to drive economic development, noting its versatility in industrial applications. H**p can be used to manufacture a wide range of products, including food, oils, animal feed, textiles, construction materials, paper, cosmetics, medicine and many other more.

The crop also has growing relevance in global manufacturing, with major industries, including the automotive sector, utilising h**p fibres in the production of various materials. Its diverse applications present opportunities to unlock new markets and stimulate investments.

The Agribusiness Development Agency, together with Ntingwe Tea-Kzn attended the event in support of initiatives aimed at advancing agricultural development.

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Mr T.A Ntuli, together with MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development Mrs Thembeni KaMadlopha-Mthethwa, launched the 2026 Multi-Planting Season at KwaGuqu in the Dlebe area of Ulundi on 3 October.

The initiative seeks to unlock under-utilised agricultural land, increase food production and strengthen the participation of small-scale farmers in commercial agriculture. During the launch, the delegation visited the women-led Kwadidwayini and Vukuzakhe cooperatives, highlighting the potential of farmer-led initiatives to contribute to agricultural productivity, food security and rural economic development.

Support to farmers includes fencing, irrigation, production inputs, market access and mechanisation. A new dip tank was also handed over at KwaNqindi to strengthen livestock health services and disease prevention.

MEC KaMadlopha-Mthethwa emphasised the importance of science-based farming decisions, with soil assessments undertaken across 50 hectares earmarked for planting and 35 hectares already prepared. Farmers were also cautioned about the potential impact of El Niño conditions during the 2026/27 summer season.

With its fertile Hutton soils and potential to produce up to 4.7 tonnes of maize per hectare under optimal dryland conditions, the Dlebe area presents significant opportunities for increased agricultural production and sustainable rural development. The ADA supported the initiative as part of efforts to advance sustainable agricultural transformation.
