The Mining Qualifications Authority (MQA), led by CEO Dr Thabo Mashongoane, actively contributed to continental skills development dialogue at Africa Skills Week (ASW) 2026, held from 12–16 October 2026 at the Harare International Conference Centre in Zimbabwe.
Participating as an invited panellist in the session titled “Skills Intelligence and Labour-Market Responsiveness: Role of Sector Skills Bodies,” Dr Mashongoane shared valuable insights on the strategic role of Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs), drawing on the MQA’s experience in advancing targeted skills development, workforce transformation, and industry-responsive training within South Africa’s mining and minerals sector.
The session was linked to the launch of the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) publication on Next Generation Sector Skills Bodies and contributed to broader discussions on strengthening skills intelligence and aligning training systems with evolving labour market demands.
Convened by the African Union Commission and hosted by the Government of Zimbabwe, in collaboration with the ILO and UNESCO, the conference was held under the theme: “Skills for Resilient and Competitive African Industries: From Training to Value Creation.”
Through its participation, the MQA reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening sector skills intelligence, promoting industry-aligned training, and contributing to continental policy dialogues that support economic resilience, workforce transformation, and industrial competitiveness across Africa.
