Statement by the South African Communist Party (SACP) Mbuyiselo Ngwenda District || On the Racist unfoldings of Racist Lumpen Vayton

10 August 2025

The South African Communist Party (SACP) Mbuyiselo Ngwenda District registers its unequivocal condemnation of the recent revelations exposing Minister Gayton’s racist history and conduct. These are not unfortunate “slips of the tongue” nor the bygone errors of youth; they are the naked expression of a deep-seated, reactionary world outlook that stands in direct opposition to the hard-won liberation of the working class and the oppressed majority of our country.

We remind the masses that racism is not merely an individual prejudice, it is a political weapon historically deployed to divide the working class, weaken class unity, and protect the interests of capital. When such poison finds its way into the bloodstream of the state, it threatens to reverse the gains of our National Democratic Revolution.

What is before us is a stark warning: placing unconscious lumpen elements at the helm of people’s institutions invites disaster. The lumpen class, rootless, opportunistic, without any organic connection to the productive forces of society, becomes fertile ground for dangerous demagogues. They are unmoored from principle, intoxicated by personal power, and incapable of building a society rooted in justice, equality, and solidarity. Their politics are transactional, their loyalties for sale, and their vision narrow, petty, and self-serving.

Minister Gayton’s brand of politics is the clearest embodiment of lumpen-populism. It thrives on the manufactured rage of the moment, exploiting genuine frustrations of the poor and unemployed, only to divert them into chauvinism, xenophobia, and factional thuggery. This is not people’s power, it is the manipulation of the people’s pain for political gain. Such populists ascend to power not through the conscious mobilisation of the working class, but through the exploitation of the naive electorate, fed a steady diet of false promises and scapegoating.

The SACP warns that the danger of this trend lies not only in the individual concerned, but in the social forces they represent. In every historical period, opportunists emerge who present themselves as champions of “the people” while serving as Trojan horses for reaction. They hollow out democratic institutions, sow division among the oppressed, and hand victory back to the very forces of exploitation we have struggled to defeat.

We call upon the progressive forces, the revolutionary working class, and all those committed to the ideals of the Freedom Charter to close ranks against this threat. Our vigilance must be sharpened. Our political education must be intensified. Our unity must be defended with the full force of revolutionary discipline.

The SACP Mbuyiselo Ngwenda District reaffirms that the leadership of people’s power cannot and must not be surrendered to the lumpen and their populist masters. The destiny of the working class must be in the hands of the most advanced, most disciplined, most principled cadres, those who live and breathe the struggle for socialism, who reject all forms of chauvinism, and who place the collective good above personal ambition.

The future of our revolution depends on our ability to expose, isolate, and defeat the politics of opportunism, racism, and populist manipulation. The working class must never be led into the swamp by those whose only compass is the pursuit of self-enrichment and demagogic spectacle. We have a revolution to defend, and we must defend it ruthlessly.

Statement by the South African Communist Party (SACP) Mbuyiselo Ngwenda District || On the Appointment of Cde Buti Manamela as Minister of Higher Education.

21 July 2025

The South African Communist Party (SACP) in the Mbuyiselo Ngwenda District welcomes the appointment of Comrade Buti Manamela as Minister of Higher Education. This is a principled and fitting appointment that affirms the strategic necessity of embedding tried and tested cadres with ideological clarity and sectoral experience into key sites of state power.

Cde Manamela’s extensive grounding in the post-school education and training (PSET) sector, including nearly a decade as Deputy Minister, has proven him to be a consistent and disciplined force for transformation. He has not wavered in advancing the demand for free, decolonised, and working-class-oriented education. His track record speaks to commitment, capacity, and a deep grasp of the structural reforms required to reposition higher education as a pillar of the developmental state.

This appointment is indicative of the Communist Party's ongoing commitment to influence the state's ideological stance. It is a direct result of the SACP's persistent advocacy for a government program that is firmly rooted in the class interests of the poor and workers rather than being technocratic or neoliberal. The Party's National Office deserves praise for its organizational vigilance and strategic stance in making sure that progressive deployments are intentional rather than accidental.

The Mbuyiselo Ngwenda District reaffirms that the higher education sector must not be commodified. It must be reconstructed as a site of radical transformation, inclusive, publicly funded, and aligned with the country’s developmental and socialist objectives. The challenges of financial exclusion, outsourcing, elitism, and epistemic colonialism remain urgent. We are confident that under Cde Manamela’s leadership, the ministry will intensify work to confront these with boldness and clarity.

This moment demands acceleration, not retreat. The Communist Party must deepen its offensive, ideologically, organisationally, and in all sites of struggle. The state must be transformed into a progressive instrument in the hands of the working class. Cde Manamela’s appointment is not a reward, it is a mandate. It signals our collective commitment to radical transformation and working-class leadership of the national democratic revolution.
